FREEDOM 250 HIGHLIGHTS FRIEDRICH WILHELM VON STEUBEN 🇺🇸🤍🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸💙 Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben was a Prussian-born military officer who had shown great promise in the well-disciplined Prussian Army. He received the honorary title of Baron, while serving as a court chamberlain for a German prince who ruled the Hohenzollern castle. While seeking new military employment, he had a chance encounter with an agent for Benjamin Franklin, who was in Paris at the time gathering support for the American Colonies. Von Steuben travelled to Paris and met with Franklin, who was impressed with Von Steuben’s military training, experience, and personality, and sent a glowing recommendation to General George Washington on his behalf.
The Continental Army rode out the winter of 1777-78 at Valley Forge, where Von Steuben drilled into the soldiers the precision, discipline, toughness and professionalism that the Prussian Army was so renowned for. Under Von Steuben’s training, the Continental Army had become a group of extremely proficient, highly motivated warriors ready to meet the British on equal terms. During this time, he authored the “Blue Book” of detailed regulations for the Army that would serve as its regulation's manual through the War of 1812. NORTHERN EUROPE CHOD - 👥 U.S. Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, commander of U.S. European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, co-chaired the 2026 Northern Europe Chiefs of Defense Conference here alongside General Raimundas Vaikšnoras, Chief of Defence of Lithuania on May 11 and 12. The event brought together senior military leaders from across the region and Allied nations. Discussions focused on the regional threat environment, lessons learned from Russia’s war against Ukraine, strengthening NATO deterrence and defense, and Allied readiness to operate together in crisis or conflict scenarios.
🗣️💬“The strategic environment we serve in is very complex and dangerous,” said Grynkewich. “The growing alignment of our adversaries combined with the possibility of simultaneous and sustained military operations reminds us all that peace requires strength. The goal of today’s conference was to ensure a shared understanding of our challenges and to chart the path forward here in northern Europe ...In short, a stronger Europe is good for all of us.”

81st Anniversary of Mauthausen Liberation
The Mauthausen-Gusen Concentration Camp complex was liberated by the U.S. Army May 5, 1945. Descendants of survivors and liberators as well as national delegations and special interest-commemoration groups were in attendance for the Mauthausen Memorial’s 81st International Liberation and Commemoration Ceremony, May 10, 2026.
The U.S. delegation was led by U.S. Embassy Vienna’s Ambassador Arthur Fisher; U.S. Army Col. Jonathan Drake, U.S. Embassy Vienna; and the State Department’s Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues Ellen Germain, along with the 7th Army Training Command’s Joint Multinational Readiness Center as the color and honor guards.

Being a mother in the military carries a unique perspective. Often, a member of the family is away, while the rest lean on a village to help. This path also can be a sisterhood, helping us bond together in shared experience.
