around the world , 99. made up of dv footage from my travels to london and voicemails from my late grandfather.
my grandfather died in september. he was 99 years old. i hadn’t seen or visited him in almost six years. my grandfather lived a century and had all the time in the world, and he gave it all to us. me. my sister. my father. his wife, iris. he had all the time in the world and even in his final days, he used his energy to be with his family. my grandfather lived almost a century and he had all the time in the world, and i had wasted it. wasted the gift he gave me, of years more of us to bond, to be together. i had six years and then none. six years and then more. the last voicemail i remember receiving from him was when i was in london, i had not picked up. i took his voice for granted. his kind words. his laugh, and small jabs at my inability to communicate, for which he was right. it was a voicemail in a sea of others, missed opportunities of intimacy. missed opportunities of love and purpose. all i have now are these voicemails. there’s a notion surrounding the idea of being selfish in your 20s. i was selfish. i was selfish enough not to give a day, when he gave us a century.
i love you, im sorry. ill call you soon.
— my first time being apart of an art gallery. words cannot express my gratitude for lauren & @ritualistcollective for giving me the chance to lay my work bare and raw for the public to see. it is an honor to be showcased among so many talented artists.
thank you jillian, adam, coral, christa, lauren, lucy, michael, sarah, chaz, kayla, ella, & elie for your vulnerability and empathy throughout the duration of the project, i owe everything to you all. your eyes and words were my guidance for the entire project.
most of all, thank you jack brotherton for creating a stunning and one-of-a-kind musical composition. you translated my work into a language i thought i could never understand.
project description below:
Bow Down to Memory is a collection of photographs that transcends any sort of time or physical space. A constant desire for stimulation, for movement, only to experience stagnancy. Days turn into weeks, into years, into decades, and so on. Familiarity is only found in flesh and in a heartbeat. Everything you’ve experienced is forever, yet nothing is the same. The hardwood floors don’t feel the same as the tall grass, but both lie above the same ground. What day is it?
