The day was April 13th, 2022.
I looked at my bank account and all I had in there was $17 to my name. I dreaded the thought of what the 1st of the month meant to me. I found myself at a crossroads…. I could either go back to my life-sucking day job, which I HATED, but I’d be able to pay my bills… OR… I had a handful of auditions I could focus on and if I even book ONE of them, I can pay my rent.
So what did I do?
Well of course I did what any well-adjusted adult would do, I said, “Screw financial security!” And I decided to take the leap and believe in my ability to be a working actor.
I took out a pen and post-it note and wrote down this:
“If I am going to go bankrupt, might as well go win an Oscar while I’m at it.”
I dated it and left it on my desk to look at, every day.
Anyone who knows me, knows I can be a bit… optimistic. Almost to a point of delusion. But I chose to trust that things will work out. All I needed was to book just one of these auditions and I’ll be okay for the month.
Well, I ended up booking three… and was now able to pay my bills for a few months.
This gave me the confidence and the affirmation (and I’m sure as well added to my delusional optimism) that I can and will be a working actor.
By the time FACES came around, I was ready for it.
Now, of course this award isn’t an Oscar, but it might as well be when i think back to that moment of being flat out broke and now looking at where I’ve ended up.
