The goal of this firing was to produce an aesthetic similar to that of a 60+hr anagama firing, while using minimal (waste) wood over a much shorter timeframe. . This firing was mainly of student work. I teach Ceramics to yr9, yr10 and yr11 (GCSE pupils) @stedwardsoxford and this work is the result of a short Kurinuki project with yr10. - In a few short weeks they learnt about clay composition (iron and grog content), the spirit, history, philosophy and process of Kurinuki, about high fired glazes, and about flyash, and woodfiring. . Here is a simple, wintery tea bowl. I wasn’t thinking it at the time of making or shooting it, but it’s become a good metaphor for how sometimes things don’t need to change. Please take this as my gentle PSA to continue being you. I’ve had a great year, and a lot of that is thanks to the people around me — close and distant alike. Life can be turbulent, so being a genuine and consistent person is something I always welcome and value. When I made this pot, I simply wanted it to be a wood-fired tea bowl. Was very happy to have some pots included in what was dubbed “The Last Firing” of the anagama test kiln with @oxfordkilns 🙏🔥 I wanted to put in something that would really show off what this kiln does best — and it delivered. I don’t usually mess with moon jars, but massive respect to those who do! Not only are these quite challenging to throw in one piece, but they really test your ability to recognise form and balance in a vessel. The difficulty comes when widening the belly—doing so without the shoulder or foot collapsing in on itself. Then stopping at that perfect moment, where the form just feels right. Interestingly, this is the bright blue Nuka you saw on those sexy mugs—layered over my darkest Tenmoku. It transforms in reduction, turning into a sparkly black—like stars in the night sky. I thought it would suit this moody moon jar well. P.S. My studio supervisor gave it a good inspection… safe to say it passed. Do you have a favourite challenging form to throw? This is a beautiful experiment putting my Oribe glaze over my Nuka glaze. Both use the same feldspar, Cornish Stone. I was not expecting this result.
