The 2026 Etchells Worlds came to a dramatic close in San Diego as James Mayo and the Magpie team secured their third straight World Championship title — a feat not accomplished in more than four decades.
Andrew Lawson and the No Drama team also hoisted their second Corinthian world championship trophy.
From “May Gray” mornings to classic San Diego afternoons, the week delivered incredible racing, unforgettable moments, and one of the deepest Etchells fleets ever assembled. Olympians. America’s Cup winners. Former World Champions. Corinthian sailors. Junior sailors. All pushing each other around the race course every single day.
“This is probably the hardest Etchells Worlds I’ve ever done,” said Ben Lamb.
And somehow through all the intensity, the smiles, friendships, and love of sailing never disappeared.

James Mayo, Paul Cayard, and Ben Lamb aboard Magpie AUS 1526 are the 2026 Etchells World Champions after winning the final race of the regatta today on San Diego Bay.
With the victory, Mayo becomes the first skipper in more than 40 years to win three consecutive Etchells World Championships.
After a nearly two-hour postponement waiting for the marine layer to clear, San Diego delivered one final classic afternoon with 10 knots of breeze and a thrilling showdown to decide the title.
“It’s very emotional. Together everyone achieves magic,” said Mayo after racing.

Olympians, World Champions, America’s Cup and SailGP sailors all lined up on the same racecourse, delivering world-class competition from start to finish.

A lingering offshore eddy keeps the breeze left early before the marine layer burns back to the coast and the seabreeze slowly builds in. Expect light and tricky conditions to start, pressure near the beach late morning, then a gradual right shift into a 8–10 knot afternoon breeze.
After noon, oscillations and staying in the best pressure will decide the championship. San Diego serving up one last tactical test. 🌊🏆

Final race day at the 2026 @etchellsclass World Championship, and North-powered teams hold the top three spots heading into the showdown in San Diego. 💨
James Mayo and the Magpie crew lead the overall standings after eight races in classic San Diego conditions, holding an 11-point advantage heading into today’s final race.
Scott Kaufman’s Rogue sits second overall, while Jim Cunningham’s Lifted remains firmly in the hunt in third, setting up an exciting final day for the North-powered fleet.
With choppy seas, tight mark roundings, and photo finishes across the fleet, Day 4 delivered some of the most intense racing of the regatta so far. Mayo is now chasing a third consecutive Etchells World Championship title, a feat not achieved in more than 40 years.

Yes, the racing is intense. Yes, the talent level is off the charts. But ask almost anyone in the boat park and they’ll tell you the same thing — this week has been just as much about the people as the results.
With four days complete in San Diego, the competition is fierce, the margins are razor thin, and somehow everyone is still finding time to laugh on the dock, share stories, and enjoy sailing in one of the most competitive fleets many have ever been part of.
