Two weeks ago, Etaf Rum read passages from her book A Woman is No Man while Jennifer Curtis and I performed music and improvised, navigating the emotional landscape of her stores in real time.
The audience wept.
The audience wants this to be a film.
We want to keep telling these stories.
NYT bestselling author Etaf Rum, violinist Jennifer Curtis, cellist Grace Lin Anderson. This Sunday.
Etaf Rumās novels detail the nuances of how immigrants forge an identity in a new land ā the intergenerational tension, the tug between tradition and having the courage to live oneās own life authentically. This Sunday, Jennifer and I bring those stories to life with sound, through improv, the KodĆ”ly Duo, and beloved melodies of Umm Kulthum and Fairouz.
One of the most meaningful collaborations of my year.

Iām honored to be part of the Virgin Islands Literary Festival in St. Croix. This beautiful festival brought together voices from across the Caribbean and beyond through panels, readings, workshops, and conversations that remind us why our stories matter. Grateful to share this space with such powerful voices and new friends. Thank you to Alscess and everyone at St. Croix š¤
This Saturday, Iāll be starting a four-week online workshop to explore how we can break free from inherited scripts and live more intentionally. Weāll dive into ambition, identity, and the subtle ways self-betrayal can shape our lives. If youāre interested, a few spots are still open. Comment āseminarā or send me a DM for details.
For the past few months, Iāve been thinking about ambition, direction, and where we may be living from conditioning rather than conscious choice. Itās possible to be competent, responsible, even successful, and still not free.
In March, Iām hosting a small 4-week seminar for people who want to stop living reactively (to family, culture, success, failure, applause, rebellion) and start choosing deliberately.
Weāll meet once a week for 90 minutes to examine:
ā freedom and identity
ā self-betrayal vs self-authorship
ā the difference between conditioning and deliberate choice
ā what it means to live in a way you can stand behind
If this resonates, comment āSeminarā or send me a DM.
Spots will be limited to keep the group intimate. Link in bio.
After so many requests from our community, weāre thrilled to introduce our newest offering: a creative writing workshop with @etafrum š
This workshop is an invitation to slow down, listen inward, and explore writing as a tool for understanding yourself more deeply.
Through gentle prompts, guided reflection, and simple writing practices, weāll use words to explore what youāre carrying, what youāre feeling, and what wants to be expressed. This is a space to write without pressure, without judgment, and without needing to get anything āright.ā
In this workshop, we will:
⢠use writing as a way to process emotion and experience
⢠reconnect with your voice and inner clarity
⢠move through blocks, self-doubt, and overthinking
⢠explore creativity as a form of self-care and healing
⢠leave with new pages and a deeper sense of connection to yourself
No experience required. Just bring yourself and a notebook.
When: Saturday, Jan 17th at 9am
Where: @rockymountmills atrium of Hopfly Brewing & Bright Penny
