One very crucial thing I’ve learned working with SMJ and the team is that you have to be ready for anything once you’re on stage. SMJ is big on the element of surprise, so much so that he surprises us-the band sometimes! (a lot actually 😂).
Thinking per second is a must-have skill for any musician playing live. Sometimes Dnath will switch up the groove, and Leo immediately follows, then the rest of us jump in. Other times, it’s Leo’s groove, a melody on keys or guitar, or a rhythm or melody from the lead singer that we pick up on.
ALWAYS STAY SHARP AND READY!
I wasn’t always this quick on my feet (still far from quick IMO). Honestly, I used to be pretty slow at picking things up on stage 😂 (don’t go thinking I’m not smart lol). It all comes down to your mind-hand coordination—and being super grounded in the moment—which you build through focused practice.
So, the moral of the story: keep practicing!
