The terror set in when I was alone with seven doctors surrounding my hospital bed, telling me I had six months left to live. I had acute myeloid leukaemia; more than 80% of my cells were cancerous. I wasn’t ready to die. At first, I just sat with this fear. It wasn’t going anywhere. Given only six months to live scared me a lot, but my fear turned into indignation. Who are you to tell me how much time I have left? Friends and family rallied around me. I was in and out of the hospital for about seven months getting chemo and waiting for my transplant. I didn’t know if I could make it. One of the drugs tore up my mouth, and I had a metal dish just for me to puke up blood. The pain did not subside for days and days. It was an open wound in my mouth. Once, I passed out so much blood that I passed out and woke up with many nurses around me. They told me I had a fit. All this felt like hell. My turning point came when I realised how many people loved and supported me, and wanted me to live. I decided that I will live, get through all the treatments, walk out of the hospital, and not come back. My donor matched me 8/8 of the Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA), which was needed for a successful transplant. I marvelled at who this hero was who saved my life, but she had to remain anonymous. We eventually met in 2022, seven years after my transplant. What’s more amazing is that we share the same birthday - same date, but different year. FFC 2025 Model Ambassador, Sophia Tan @esthersoph was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) in May 2015, just after she had participated in a dengue study. Despite her initial shock, Sophia took control of her treatment, opting for chemotherapy and focusing on positivity. She later found a perfect bone marrow match and underwent a successful transplant, defying the odds. 10 years on, Sophia is healthy, married, and active again. She now advocates for bone marrow donation, and volunteers with the Bone Marrow Donor Programme (BMDP). In just a couple of weeks, Sophia along with 24 other inspiring cancer warriors will walk the runway to raise funds for cancer research and patient support on Saturday, 13 September 2025, from 4.00pm-8.00pm at @thewestinsingapore .
