Hi friends, I’m going to be a professor of oceanography at Shannon Point Marine Center in WA! Starting August 1st and will be there for a whileee (several to many years at least). Super stoked on this new chapter and ready to see all the PNW homies and have folks visiting. if you know of any housing/ homie leads in Bellingham or Anacortes plz hit me up! Lots of love 💜
Playing seven bar in Santa Barbara with @gradyzant !! Super excited to share a night with the homie and share new unreleased music all live on hardware! Will be a very dance heavy night, mark your calandres and hope to see you there 💜💜
A BIG thank you to everyone that showed up for Science Dance Club!! Was a huge success, and was so excited to see so many people there for our very first go at it :) (@georgiarhodes ). Thank you again to our speakers @oceanecogeochemlab , Kavi Rangan and jp_bernot y’all killed it and there were so many good laughs, and goofy nerdy appreciation for the world was shared in abundance. Thank you @gradyzant for always bringing the tunes that keep the people dancing. Thank you @machineswithmagnetsvenue for having us and allowing us to try out this idea and execute it for the public! Again thank you so much to everyone that came out, especially dear friends that flew across country, took trains in, and drove to support, meant so much. Love you all and hope to see everyone at the next one! 💜💜💜
Hi all, we invite you to ‘Science Dance Club’ on May 29th at Machines with Magnets! You do not need to be a scientist to come to this! This is for everyone who is inclined or even mildly interested, but is a 21+ event. We have 4 amazing short talks on a RNA recoding in cephalopods by Kavi Rangan, parasitism in copepods by Jimmy Bernot, historical archives hidden in deep sea corals by Kelton McMahon ( @oceanecogeochemlab ) and how embryos get their shape by Beatrice Steinert. Music will be followed immediately by @gradyzant to take you through a journey of deep house sounds that pay homage to the queer and black roots or electronic music. No previous experience in science or dancing required. @georgiarhodes and I have been scheming this one for a while and are very excited to share this amazing night with y’all!
Red Sea Coral Reef 2024 water temperatures mapped to sound and animation, really really fun, challenging and unexpectedly emotional project I worked on in collaboration with @eco.oce.lab and NSF Visathon. Details below:
sound and animation of this video were created by mapping 2024 water temperature data from a reef in the central Red Sea (data collected by KAUST Eco Oce Lab /) as part of the larger NSF funded VIS-A-THON project. During 2024, the central Red Sea experienced an unprecedented marine heat wave in the summer that bleached and killed essentially all corals above 20 m depth. This project was primarily a mapping project but also explored the devastation of human induced ocean warming and the temporal emotional component of experiencing this event and its aftermath. There was an unexpected bidirectional mapping where a 1:1 mapping of temperature data to different parameters on a wave table synthesizer and animation resulted in an experienced that then mapped an emotional landscape back on me. This then lent itself to an arrangement of the music video that followed big moments in the year: water temperatures getting above and exceeding 30 deg Celsius for several weeks, the subsequent coral bleaching and later, the death of these corals. For reference, one kick drum represents one day and the whole song represents the whole year of 2024. Hope you enjoy!
‘FLOWER APPLES’ out now! Links in bio 💜 thanks to fable and kavi for the amazing album art and animation! And big thanks to everyone in my life for the love and support
