The “dual state” theory explains how two different legal systems can emerge during authoritarian rule. While one set of society carries on with life as relatively normal, a targeted minority group is instead subjected to a separate legal system, where normal laws don’t apply and arbitrary rules are designed to oppress and shun them from public life. This is currently playing out in the United States an a variety of fronts, according to civil rights attorney @esqueer_ , including medical care. On one hand, the federal government is deregulating all sorts of snake-oil medical treatments with scant scientific evidence, while simultaneously allowing bans on gender affirming care, which is backed by every major medical association in the United States. #dualstate #trans #transrights #genderaffirmingcare #onthemedia

You go to work. You pay your taxes. You have dinner with your family, and then maybe you go for a nice walk through the park on the weekend. If authoritarianism is really on the rise, then why does daily life still feel somewhat normal for many Americans? That’s because we’re operating under what political science Ernst Fraenkel referred to as “the dual state,” where life carries on mostly as normal for many people, while targeted minority groups are routinely subjected to arbitrary violence by the state, according to civil rights attorney @esqueer_ . Ernst Fraekel developed this theory after observing the collapse of the Weimar Republic and the rise of the Third Reich, but it remains a powerful tool for understanding how authoritarian legal systems develop and become entrenched in society. #transrights #transgender #lgbtq #trans #onthemedia

New episode. Link in stories and bio. There is a war on trans people happening in America today. It has been raging for years, but as Trump has come to power a second time, it is more powerful than ever. Sadly, in the midst of so much devastation and due to the usual biases, these stories have not gone mainstream. Trans people are targeted everywhere, and yet we do not hear much from them. In this episode, I talk with my friend and co-conspirator @esqueer_ about her experiences as a trans person and activist. Alejandra has been an incredible voice for her community. Brave, heroic, and so much more, right at a time when she is most vulnerable. I hope you will listen and take this one in, despite how dark it may feel. Her words matter deeply.
