Taken shortly after seeing Jon Bernthal (@jonnybernthal ) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s (@ebonmossbachrach ) stage adaptation of ‘Dog Day Afternoon’ (@dogdaybway ) on Broadway; addled and converted by the performances and production value, Gabriel and I found ourselves working through the primal scream delivery of it all as we waited on the Q Train. It always strikes me how often stage plays settle into themselves, becoming so rote to the point of feeling neutered, and this did the complete opposite. A volatile and living experience.

Kennedy Jr. Three biographies later we had the bones for a project we titled ‘Public Son’. The LA transplant from Rhode Island has already been flagged more than once in New York as a dead ringer for John-John—especially now (for better or worse) given the feverish obsession with @fxnetworks ’ #lovestory. Over the last year and a half it’s been my good fortune to work through auditions with Chris and spend long stretches talking about the craft itself; why we pursue it, and what we feel the industry has slowly let slip that we still want to bring back into the work. He walks the line between two epochal traditions. There’s the classical movie star control you saw in men like Warren Beatty and Paul Newman. Clean lines, economy, presence. And then there’s the colder, intuitive European mode you see in Alain Delon in PURPLE NOON and LA PISCINE, or the restless edge of Jean-Paul Belmondo. Craft on one side. Instinct on the other. Later this year he’ll be one of the co-leads in the proof of concept for my debut feature. Some collaborations take time. This one is finally rounding the corner.
