🌱 TOMORROW PASEO POR EL WESTSIDE IS HERE! 🌱
For decades the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center has worked towards preserving San Antonio’s Westside. The Paseo por el Westside is a culmination of those efforts, meant to educate, honor, and celebrate the Westside while also showcasing the amazing community, their traditions and history.
🌼 To kick off the event, the Paseo will have a workshop called “Esperanza Historic Preservation Work” at 9AM to discuss the effort it takes to fight gentrification and the work that has been done so far.

Join us in person for an exciting evening featuring the Premiere screening of “The Librarians” in San Antonio, followed by a lively panel discussion with local librarians. Don’t miss this unique chance to experience the film up close and engage in an informative chat afterward!
The film offers a look into the front lines of librarians emerging as first responders in the fight for democracy and free speech. In Texas only, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQIA+ stories - triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of a large-scale coordinated extremist movement fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work - the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale.
A huge thank you to the 🗞️San Antonio Current and ✍️ Samara Gerstle for this article interviewing 2 of our panelists and Amber Alonso @amberalonso1 , a producer of the documentary @thelibrariansfilm .

🎙️As heard this morning on TPR!
Did you catch two of our panelists on Texas Public Radio’s Morning Edition with Norma Martinez?
Meet 2 of the voices leading the conversation:
📚Suzette Baker isn't just a librarian; she’s a Texan hero in the fight for the First Amendment. As a former head librarian in Llano County, Suzette stood her ground against book bans and censorship, and lost her job as a result! Her story was captured in the documentary.
🎨 Anel Flores is a renowned San Antonio author and artist whose writings and work remind us of the power of storytelling in the face of censorship.
