For Nico Aviña, soccer has never been just a game. It’s a sport he’s been playing since he was 5 years old, and Aviña grew up collecting jerseys from his favorite teams and idolizing soccer legends like Diego Maradona, who outwardly expressed his political views on and off the pitch. The jerseys Aviña makes and wears today carry the same spirit.
At Espacio 1839 (@espacio1839 ) in Boyle Heights, Aviña transforms vintage soccer jerseys into wearable political statements.
As Los Angeles prepares to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer, one year after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids took hold of the city, Aviña wants his work to spread a message that is loud and unequivocally clear.

This is a free event. If you would like to join the Cascarita (pick up), we will have early sign ups. But, we will also open it up for folx to join day of event. Come ready to play!

Friday June 12 from 6-9 at Espacio 1839 in Boyle Heights is the opening reception for Sonia Romero & Art Carrillo: Selected Works. Join us for this duo exhibit of paintings from both these contemporary artists. On exhibit will be both new and previously shown pieces. Hope to see you there.

What up East side ! I’m going to be doing a book binding workshop next week at Espacio 1839 in Boyle heights! If you ever wanted to learn the beautiful craft of Binding come thru! All payments must be made no later than Thursday May14th.

We continue with highlighting the beauty that is our community of Boyle Heights. Today we continue on 1st Street. We will check out some murals then getting breakfast at Tenampal. Tenampal is located at 1859 e 1st Street.
