Esma Akın (@esencees ), born in Antalya and currently based in Istanbul, Turkey, carries the essence of the Mediterranean in her art, shaped by a deep connection to the landscapes, histories, and rhythms of the region. Her roots, spanning generations and migration stories, influence her creative lens. As a dancer, choreographer, and multimedia artist who co-founded the @improvisationdancefestival , her work delves into themes of collective memory, identity, and resilience. She integrates movement, sound, and visual elements to craft immersive narratives, often rooted in sociopolitical contexts. In this interview, we explore her personal and artistic journey, focusing on how her Mediterranean heritage influences her art, her views on migration and displacement, and how she translates complex theories into physical movement, creating works that resonate emotionally and politically. @dansemadancetheater and @attafestival co-production performance Out There, originally designed for babies aged 6~18 months, was re-adapted this year with our choreographer @birutebaneviciute for children with special needs and met with The Senses of Garden. Yet this is more than just a performance it is a long journey, and feelings danced beyond the limits of words. From Istanbul to Adıyaman to Antakya, these lands carry not only the weight of destruction but also the promise of rebirth. In the earthquake stricken regions, we felt the pulse of the earth through our bodies, finding healing in every movement and connection in every touch. Reaching into the world of children through dance and sharing in their quiet yet profound expressions reminded us once again of how the body can transform into a vessel of healing. Through dance, we learned that the body is not merely a tool it is the keeper of our roots, our emotions, and our memories. Dancing on these lands was like witnessing new shoots sprouting in a shattered garden. Every movement became a dance of recovery and renewal. This journey was not only transformative for the children but for us as well. Together, we rediscovered the language of our bodies and celebrated the life that follows loss. Because after every devastation, the dancing bodies plant the seeds of a new garden. Huge thanks to all crew @burcuzo @hakansilahsizoglu @aycaaakbulutttt 🤍 Wishing for new year may each movement be a spark of hope and every step a path to healing 🌱
