🧪✨ From long days in the lab to defending years of hard work… let’s go! 🙏🏼… here some of the best Reilly moments in the lab! 🐭🦠
This Friday, Reilly Nash Brennan will defend his PhD in Entomology at Virginia Tech with his presentation: “A Multiscale Perspective on Orthohantavirus-Host Relationships” 🦠 🐀
We’re so proud of you, Reilly 👏🎓
📅 Friday, May 8th⏰ 9:30 AM📍 Steger Hall Room 118💻 Zoom link available in my bio!
Today we remember the 32 Hokies who lost their lives on April 16, 2007. Their legacy continues to live in our hearts. Today, Escobar Lab also ran in their honor. 🙏🏼🕊️ #vtweremember
@vt_cnre recently held its annual Spring Awards Celebration to recognize outstanding achievements among students, faculty, staff, and alumni during the 2025-26 academic year.👏
🎉 Paige Van de Vuurst McClure ’21 was named Outstanding Recent Alumna for her efforts in advancing understanding of zoonotic disease dynamics in vampire bats, climate change impacts, and public health risk in global communities.
The college recognized the following faculty for their excellence in research, teaching, mentorship, inclusion, and service:
🎉 Holly Kindsvater, Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation associate professor, Principles of Community Award
🎉 Quinn Thomas, Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation professor and Co-Director of the Center for Ecosystem Forecasting, Research Achievement Award
🎉 Haldre Rogers, Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation associate professor, Outstanding Undergraduate Student Mentor Award

We are excited to share that Dr. Luis Escobar will be presenting as part of the Entomology Seminar Series 🦟🌍
In this talk, Luis will explore how environmental change, climate dynamics, and host movement are reshaping the global distribution of pathogens and parasites. Understanding these patterns is key to predicting disease risk and protecting both wildlife and human health.
Join us for an insightful discussion at the intersection of ecology, epidemiology, and global change. 🌎 🌍 🦠 🦟

Sinking our teeth into new research!🦇🙌
@vt_cnre associate professor Luis E. Escobar and Ph.D. student Analorena Cifuentes-Rincon were recently part of an international team that found female vampire bats outsize their male counterparts.
This discovery may help explain how sex differences influence rabies spread and mitigation.
Head to the link in our bio to learn more about these fang-tastic findings!
It’s been a busy and productive period for the lab across multiple fronts 🔥PROUD of the team and grateful for our collaborators around the world 🌎

Skarleth is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Conservation under the supervision of Dr. Willandia Chavez. Her research explores the intersection between urbanization, food security, wildlife conservation, and zoonotic diseases.
She joined us as a visiting student for one month, during which she contributed to a review on diseases associated with roadkill wildlife, an important step toward understanding how human–wildlife interactions shape disease dynamics.
Thank you, Skarleth, for bringing your energy, curiosity, and ideas to the lab. You’ll always be welcome back to the Escobar Lab! 🥳
