Filmmaker Esben Sloth was born and raised in Denmark, studied film in the Czech Republic, and harbours dreams of moving to Sao Paulo, all contributing to the aesthetic and themes of his 2025 T-Port Lighthouse-selected film ŽEBRA, which caught the eye of our Guest Curator Kasia Karwan.
We chatted to the filmmaker about his travels, creativity, and what it was like to work on a 2-day shoot with real film, a child actor, and the perfect staircase for his final short film project.

It's crazy to look back on the time living in a foreign city with 100s other passionate foreigners from all over the world trying to learn to make films. I remember the perspective it gave me. Not from making the films but from meeting all these people. @osameanwer from Kurdistan telling stories about fighting for the right to make films in a corrupt society. @mandypaiva having grown up inside a city of 12 million people. @thekliita that spoke 4 different languages because of her scattered family. @gustavorobinsonf the pig farmer from Peru that had spent all his savings for the one opportunity to make films. This is just to name a few of the stories that struck me there... There are many many more.
What I just want to use this post to, is to say thank you for broadening my perspective beyond my little world in tiny Denmark. I want to encourage people to look beyond what you think there is, seek out connection in places you normally don't go, listen and learn and use it to inspire others.
Thanks to @famuinternational for facilitating, thanks to my wonderful crew for spending the time and energy in this cold, cold concrete building. I know the film is just a small one in a sea of 1000s of films, but I hope you'll go and have a little watch and give it some stars. It would mean a lot ❤️

I'm proud to announce that our film Žebra was selected for the T-Port Lighthouse Selection 2025!
This means our small film will live a life out in the world for a little bit longer! First screening is already tomorrow Wed Mar 5th at 14.30-17.00 at @tamperefilmfestival in Finland with more to come! I'm super happy for that.
Again, hugeeee thanks to @famuinternational and all the amazing world wide crew I got to meet and collaborate with in Prague 22-23. It was like a dream ❤️

Our funding will contribute to film their upcoming project “Burrow”: In a disconnected modern society, the 12 year old Ana from São Paulo and 78 year old Otto from Copenhagen mysteriously connect across the globe. As their realities grow increasingly incomprehensible, they decide to try and find each other.

It's now been a year since we ran around in this cold staircase shooting our little film in Prague. All the crew has gone back to their home countries and begun their hopeful new film careers. Our catch-ups and conversations have gotten fewer and further inbetween. However, I'm proud that we have this film among many other films as a remembrance of our unique time and experience together<3
I can also happily announce that the amazing screenwriter @daniiesposito and I are continuing our collaboration and will (if things goes according to plan!) shoot our next film later this year! Super excited for this<3
But first is a little teaser for our little film that soon will be screening publicly in the world!
