Part 1- Long posts are the worst. But this one needs to exist — a public testament in the town square for everyone involved in “Join Me In L.A.” The Songs of Warren Zevon. Huge thanks to Mount Rushmore of Wild Honey: Paul Rock, Michael Ackerman, Andrew Sandoval, and David Jenkins for doing these shows all these years. Music and charity are the best things we can do for each other, and I’m honored they trusted me and Nick Vincent to steer the ship. Nick Vincent and I were the co–Musical Directors. No matter what the alphabet or posters say, there was no daylight between us. You could make an anagram combining both our names for the MD credit. This one works: Convincer Junk Masterminds. “The Jordans.” Jordan Zevon and I have been at it since we were 15. We both don’t need to publicly acknowledge each other — we know. But imagine being him throughout this strange, singular situation. His performance on and off stage in this massive undertaking and leading up to the Hall of Fame is breathtaking. David Jenkins. The truth is that none of this happens without him. It’s for him, because of him, and he’s the reason everybody signs on to do this. The most you can do, David Jenkins does more, and leaves lifelong friends in his wake. Mensch. His name should be at the top of every poster. Whatever Andrew Sandoval does behind the scenes is working. Every aspect of the show gets better, clearer, and classier when he’s involved. He also plays guitar on everything and looks good doing it. We needed three things for this show to be legitimate: Jordan Zevon, Jackson Browne, and Jorge Calderón. Jordan asked, and Jackson and Jorge graciously were the first artists to commit to the show, making it a family affair and paving the way for everyone else to say yes. The most important yesses we got were music fantasy-camp legends who played with Warren Zevon and countless others. Leland Sklar, Bob Glaub, Rick Marotta, and Jennifer Condos. All put in so many hours of work, hung out, and lived up to the hype. Extra thanks to Bob Glaub, who put in more billable hours than any budget could afford. I love Amy Weissenberg. She keeps me afloat.
