Introducing our Writers in Residence 2026 🌟
𝗘𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 (@ernest.again )
Ernest Price is transgender man living and writing on Bunurong land. His debut novel The Pyramid of Needs was published by Affirm Press in 2024. It is a dark, wry and deeply illuminating examination of family dynamics in a world full of division and misinformation. His creative nonfiction has been published by Overland and Queerstories. By day, he teaches high school English.
Throughout his Residency, Ernest will continue the development of Complicit, a novel about a teenager’s act of white supremacy told through the perspectives of those around him, exploring community, connection and young people’s engagement with divisive politics.

Today is Trans Day of Visibility.
Visibility without protection is dangerous, and we’re rapidly losing our hard-won protections. Here are some rad photos from Gang of Babes in the spirit of TDOV. Last year I won some money to travel to the USA for research.
I can’t make that trip now, because it’s effectively illegal for trans people to travel to the USA right now. Trans rights are being eviscerated in the USA. People are losing access to healthcare, employment and even the right to drive.
If you’re not aware of what has been happening, give it a cursory Google.
The far-right wants to do the same here. It’s silly to mourn my lost trip.
We’re watching a genocide unfold, amongst seemingly unending horrors. The only thing we can
do is fight for each other. The struggles against racism, for a free Palestine, for trans liberation and on and on - they’re all linked. None of us are free until all of us are free.
We have to fight.
And we have to win.
Some new author photos to go with my getting-there manuscript.
The incredible @gangofbabesphotography shot these this morning. Jax is an absolute wizard. I am not a fan of the camera, but I am genuinely grateful for these images, and her kindness. Check out her work, and hire her if you’re in the market!
This afternoon I spoke with a book club at the Department of Education about “The Pyramid of Needs”. I was blown away by the generosity of readers who have thought so deeply about the work. What an honour to speak with them - it was exactly what I needed. Now I’m on the rail replacement bus home to put some words down on novel number two.
Would love to see you here. Bookings are open now: https://libraries.darebin.vic.gov.au/News-and-events/Events/Events-calendar/Eventbrite/Ernest-Price-Author-Talk-Celebrate-Trans-Awareness-Week-1708881573789
In the latest episode of Date With A Debut, I sit down with @ernest.again , author of The Pyramid of Needs. We discuss the book, releasing it on the International Transgender Day of Visibility, family dynamics, different forms of truth, and more.
