Sewerby Curator's Choice object of the week: Bridlington’s Rural Heritage 🌾 Bridlington, surrounded by the farmlands of Holderness and the high Wolds, has a rich agricultural history rooted in food production and animal care. This week’s objects showcase the tools of rural veterinarians and farmers of the past. 🔹 Sheep Shears – Manual clippers for removing fleece, these have been used since medieval times when wool was an economic cornerstone. 🔹 Snipping Implement – A smaller tool, similar in design to docking shears, used for animal care. 🔹 Docking Shears – Once used to dock tails, now banned for animal welfare reasons. Today, these relics reside in museums, reminding us of evolving farming practices. These objects are a testament to Bridlington’s farming legacy and the changing landscape of animal care. 🐑 🌾 The house is open weekends between 11.30am - 3.30pm (last admission 3pm) and admission fees apply.

This week's Sewerby Hall Curator's Choice has been chosen by our work placement student, Sarah. Sarah is studying Travel and Tourism and was interested in our collection of Bridlington Brochures and other tourist items. She has chosen these brochures for display as they illustrate the changing attitudes toward holidays and holidays makers, as well as the rise in sophistication of holiday marketing. Their slogans, imagery and developing use of colour technology not only encapsulate the history of Bridlington as a seaside resort but are also a microcosm of the British seaside holiday between the 1920s and the end of the 1970s.
