A yarn set for Banana and Sheep, knitted with Nomadnoos’s Silky Banana, will soon be available for pre-order from Nomadnoos and Sophie’s shop. Most of Nomadnoos yarns are hand-spun in Nepal, but this Silky Banana is quite unique within their collection, as it is machine-made. Apparently, the machine itself is very old, and perhaps because of that, the yarn thickness is truly uneven throughout. This unevenness creates areas in the fabric that are thin and others that have more texture and body — and personally, I really love how that becomes part of the character and nuance of the knitted fabric. And what I would call the most remarkable feature of this yarn is how dramatically it changes after blocking. Among the photos in this post, there are also pictures taken right after knitting, before blocking. Once blocked, the fabric opens up dramatically! Because of that, I highly recommend knitting your swatch slightly larger than usual. Not only does the fabric expand, but while knitting, the yarn initially feels a little dry and crisp. After blocking, though, it transforms into a smooth and silky texture. It surprises me every single time! Compared to the previous Banana yarn, this version is finer. Because the yardage is also longer, the finished garment feels lighter than before. The navy color used for this sample is a new shade called Indigo Off. Now the question is… Should I make it long sleeves or short sleeves? ｜ KOGO vest It was originally a pattern for Nomadnoos 8-ply yarn, but I suddenly felt like knitting it, so I used three strands of Nomadnoos Erisilk together (a bit indulgent 🙈) as a relaxing project. It turned out to be a quick pattern—I finished it in about two days, knitting during my commute, lunch breaks, and evenings. Riding that momentum, I wanted to use up the remaining yarn, so next I was knitted a shorter version using two strands held together, just enough to use up what’s left. The photo shows the version made with three strands. It works well with denim, and also on workdays with a jacket thrown over it. The yarn is 100% silk, called “Peace and Love Silk.” The name comes from how the silk is made. Normally, silkworms are boiled to produce long, continuous threads. But for this yarn, the moths are allowed to emerge from the cocoons and fly away first. Because of that, the yarn is spun from shorter fibers. I also personally love that it’s called “Eri” 🙈 Using this yarn, Naoko @atelierknits_strandsoflife is planning to release a minimal pullover with her signature touch, featuring bead details. ｜ Hiekka � Now that the rights to Hiekka, which was published in Laine Issue 27, have returned to me, I decided to release it today—without waiting for the season 🙈 I wanted to try a slightly different construction than usual. I started from the shoulder panel to give it a unique structure. For my imagined outfit, I’d wear it loosely over a long shirt or a shirt dress, paired with long boots or over-the-knee boots. I don’t actually own either of those items, though 🙈 Maybe I’ll try it next winter ❤️ The pattern name Hiekka means “sand” in Finnish. I chose this name because the stitch pattern reminds me of an hourglass, or the traces left by wind blowing across sand. Lastly, the yarn I chose was a special type called Unspun, which made me wonder what other yarns would work well. So, I asked yarn shops and dyers to test the pattern and suggest suitable yarn options as well. To everyone who participated in the testing—thank you so much for your help, especially during such a hot time of year, from early summer through the peak of the season last year. Seeing the cherry blossoms reminded me of this shawl. It’s a shawl where the stitching changes, inspired by the feeling of walking through a spring field.
