Remembering my friend, Lyle Prijoles
@lylestyles .
It still feels completely surreal writing this, as I recorded this Instagram live for the 5th time trying to get the lighting right, the words right, and saying the words to ask donations to support the family of my friend, Lyle Prijoles, so that his body can return from the Philippines back to the U.S.
Please consider making a donation

I met Lyle organizing in support of “The Debut,” hailed as the first Filipino American film back in the day and I still remember his voice, cadence, and style. It’s a shock to the system to find out your friend, someone you knew passed, and hits very heavy in ways you never anticipated.
He embodied what we look for as leaders and is someone I know firsthand, as both of us poets, journalists, scholars of Asian American and Ethnic Studies, also personally that he cared deeply about the quest for social justice, truth, and stood up for his beliefs.
As painful as this is for a lot of us to experience such a tremendous loss of a passionate community organizer, I was relieved to return to Bindlestiff Studio,
@bindlestiff_sf , known as the epicenter of Filipino American arts. I was able to participate in a collective poem in the audience on grief, which I’ve re-read here from my notes. I hope that you all, who are grieving Lyle, Kai, and the Negros 19 at this time seek out all the resources and help you need as you process all the emotions that have come up upon learning about this tragedy.
I’m also glad I finally performed a poem I think would have been fitting and did justice as a tribute to Lyle.
I’ll share more posts to amplify the many organizations who have been organizing in the Philippines.
My thoughts and prayers are with my friend Lily Prijoles,
@hoboflips , one of my earliest inspirations in spoken word, a member of the 8th Wonder (4 Pinay and 4 Pinoy) spoken word collective, who I have the privilege of knowing all these years, as well as the Prijoles family, the Negros 19 and their families at this time.
