This is a body of work for solo violin and electronics that’s been slowly forming over years—through pious study, raucous and wild collaboration, and a deep relationship with Ethiopian music and its many lineages
It means a lot to share this with you now.

Eric Lane (@ericlanes ) + El Primo (@elbeatdelprimo ) weave an assemblage of sounds that escaped from the event horizon of the universe. They danced ecstatically for light years and now resonate from the minds of those aforementioned gents, playing a veritable hive mind of analog keys, loop stations and drum permutations.
Sheeeittt, I don't know what any of that means but I am so ready to have my mind blowwwwwwwn.... away. 🌋⚡️🪐🪐🌠🌌.
Both are project maniacs, most lately as members of @los_cumpleanos and also de Primo is longtime member of our darlings @stringsnskins (miss y'all, reunion show here pls!!). And Eric does some awesome work with the great @murrayhill among other things. I dunno check out their IG's and Bandcamps they're great!

🎵: "Sonrisa" by Los Cumpleaños
Today I’m releasing my interpretation of Belomi Bena.
This is a Gurage traditional tune made widely known through recordings by Mahmoud Ahmed— rooted in a powerful rhythmic tradition — one that’s deeply connected to movement, dance, and communal energy.
In my visits to Gurage region, I felt energy of the hopping dance, and the plant worship of Enset— also this is the land of kitfo– a raw meat delicacy drizzled with hot spiced clarified butter, which makes you feel euphorically superhuman after one bite!
In this version, I’ve translated that energy into a solo violin setting, holding onto the drive and spirit of the original while filtering it through my own musical language.
Belomi Bena is the second single from my upcoming album Woradj Alle, which is out April 20th.

Some songs stop you dead in your tracks the first time you hear them.
Musicawi Silt was one of those for me.
Written by Girma Beyene and first recorded by the Walias Band during Ethiopia’s golden age of music, it’s a piece built on hypnotic overlaying rhythmic patterns and a melody that drifts in and out, appearing somewhere new each time it returns.
Over the years it’s been interpreted by musicians across the world.
Here is my humble offering to that lineage.
