Hilma af Klint (1862-1944)
The Swedish artist and mystic is now recognized as a pioneer of abstract art, having created non figurative works several years before Wassily Kandinsky, the artist long credited as the first abstract painter. Af Klint’s work was deeply rooted in spiritualism and Theosophy. In 1896, af Klint cofounded a group called The Fem (The Five) with four other women: Anna Cassel, Cornelia Cederberg, Sigid Hedman, and Mathilda Nilsson. They explored the sipritualism and the occulty through séances, automatic writing, and drawing, believing they could channel messages from higher beings.
Af Klint’s Primordial Chaos series (1906-07) was the first series in her larger The Paintings for the Temple, an ensemble of almost two hundred works conceived to be displayed in a spiral building that would double as a initiatic journey. Primordial Chaos comprises twenty-six small canvases, sixteen of which were featured in the exhibition entitled « Fata Morgana. Memories of the Invisible » at the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi (Palazzo Morando) in Milan. It is the very first group of abstract works af Klint created. This series explores the birth of the world and fundamental dualities, such as male and female, heaven and earth, which af Klint believed were central principles of existence. The paintings utilize a symbolic language af Klint developed to convey her spiritual insights.
For instance, blue represented the feminine and yellow the masculine with green, symbolyzing their union. The spiral form, often featured, symbolized growth, progress and evolution, aligning with Theosophical concepts.
