ARTIST SPOTLIGHT — WOMEN ACROSS AMERICA: 1945-1979 | Research Assistant Alabel Chapin discusses Lee Krasner’s “Present Conditional,” 1976—part of the now-open exhibition “Women Across America: 1945–1979”
“Present Conditional,” 1976, is a large-scale collage painting which incorporates several of Krasner’s early studies in charcoal and oil, cut into confident shapes, and arranged into a dynamic grid format. The work belongs to the series “Eleven Ways to Use the Word To See,” which the artist showed in a solo exhibition of the same title at Pace Gallery in 1977. The impetus for the series was a studio visit from her friend, the art critic Bryan Robertson. Perusing the racks of her Long Island studio, they re-discovered Krasner’s student portfolios, filled with charcoal drawings of a nude model. Krasner decided to repurpose her student drawings by slicing them up and organizing them into large, multi-panel constructions which reference verb tenses and states of action.

OPEN NOW — WOMEN ACROSS AMERICA: 1945-1979, LOWER LEVEL GALLERY VIEW | Eric Firestone Gallery is pleased to present “Women Across America: 1945–1979,” an exhibition that showcases connections between women across the country in the post-World War II period. This exhibition highlights the rich tradition of abstraction within the period across various mediums. Taking inspiration from William Gerdts’s sprawling “Art Across America: Two Centuries of Regional Painting 1710–1920,” the three-volume encyclopedia of art in the United States, this exhibition reimagines what an Americanist Art History of the postwar period might look like if told through women’s art. The show traces a transitional time for women within the art world, with figures such as Adaline Kent and Jeanne Reynal who forged their own paths in order to work as artists, painters like Pat Passlof and Helen Frankenthaler who fought for a place within the New York School, and artists who became outspoken in their feminism during the women’s movement like Miriam Schapiro and Nina Yankowitz. This exhibition furthers the gallery’s commitment to reexamining modern and contemporary art histories of the United States, especially championing underrecognized artists.

FINAL DAY TOMORROW & CULTURED MAG FEATURE—COUPLES | Tomorrow 5/2 is the last chance to see “Couples,” an exhibition of work by 26 artist-partners. 5 of the couples were recently interviewed by Julia Halpern of @cultured_mag in “‘The Studio Is the Only Other Woman’: 5 Artist Couples on What It’s Like to Share a Calling”
A throughline in the exhibition is artwork that visualizes component parts, distinct but coming together into a whole. This aesthetic becomes a metaphor for connection, partnership, and individuals belonging to a larger community and consciousness. Many of these abstract paintings and sculptures suggest the bridging of spaces between personhood, the digital world, and the cosmos.

LAST WEEK OPEN — SARI DIENES: NIGHT EYES | This is the final week to see “Sari Dienes: Night Eyes,” on view through March 21, 2026 at 40 Great Jones Street, NYC. Senior Director Jennifer Samet (@jensamet ) walks you through some of the key works of the exhibition.
Night Eyes is the gallery’s first solo exhibition of Dienes’s work since announcing representation in September 2025. It includes work made between 1935–70: early Surrealist paintings; mixed-media rubbings of New York City manhole covers, walls of Kyoto, and ancient petroglyphs; plaster collages; and assemblage sculptures.
Her paintings, which were shown at four exhibitions at Betty Parsons Gallery in the 1950s, were made by applying pigment to her surfaces with a combination of brushes, rollers, rags, and her fingers. They incorporate a spectrum of colors and touches across their often vast surfaces, resulting in complex abstractions full of movement. They record not just the artist’s painterly marks, but a rich history of human presence beyond her own.

OPEN TODAY - New Wave Art Wknd
Opening Reception, Artist Walkthrough at 2:30PM | Eric Firestone Gallery is pleased to announce an artist walkthrough by Huê Thi Hoffmaster, a featured artist in the gallery’s exhibition “Cross Generational: 1950 to Now,” on March 7 at 2:30pm as part of New Wave Art Wknd 2026.
Hoffmaster (b. Lancaster, PA, 1982) is a painter whose language of energetic lines and masses of color read alternately as calligraphic script, abstract still lifes, and bodies in conversation. Hoffmaster’s recent paintings reflect the influence of both Eastern and Western painting traditions, combining his academic formal training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and interest in Chinese landscape painting. He does not work from sketches or preparatory drawings, seeing art-making as an event where he can embrace the inconsistencies and energy of the moment. His recent work melds spontaneous expressionism and naturalism. The son of Vietnamese and American parents, Hoffmaster now lives and works in Weston, Connecticut. The artist was the subject of a solo show at the gallery’s New York City location in 2025.
Eric Firestone Gallery is proud to be a Gallery Partner for the 2026 iteration of New Wave Art Wknd. Since 2018, NWAW has brought together artists, collectors, curators, and other industry leaders for a weekend of special events throughout Palm Beach Island and West Palm Beach. These wide-ranging cultural events and signature benefit dinner support New Wave’s year-round Artist-in-Residence program in Palm Beach. Hoffmaster’s talk and gallery walkthrough will kick off an afternoon of programming in Flamingo Park with other neighborhood galleries.

Panel Discussion —Thursday, 3/5 at 6:00 PM • In conjunction with the exhibition “Sari Dienes: Night Eyes,” Eric Firestone Gallery invites you to a panel discussion with Judith Brodsky, Michelle Donnelly, and Alix Vernet. The exhibition is open through March 21, 2026.
Eric Firestone Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition “Sari Dienes: Night Eyes,” on view until March 21, 2026 at 40 Great Jones Street, NYC. The show is a survey of the groundbreaking experimental artist, born in Hungary in 1898, whose career links European Surrealism, American Neo-Dada, and Pop art. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue featuring a newly commissioned essay by scholar and curator Michelle Donnelly, PhD.
Concurrently, Eric Firestone Gallery presents “Everything She Touches”: work by emerging contemporary artist Alix Vernet, in conversation with the art and legacy of Dienes. Vernet’s practice has been engaged in ideas that motivated Dienes, namely place, capturing momentary experience, and manipulating materials through direct bodily encounter.
*This conversation will be held exclusively in-person with a recording to be posted at a later date*

OPEN NOW — SARI DIENES: NIGHT EYES | Eric Firestone Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition Sari Dienes: Night Eyes, on view February 4 – March 21, 2026 at 40 Great Jones Street, NYC. On view is a selection of Dienes’ “plaster collages”
In 1949, Dienes worked with Stanley Hayter at the famed Atelier 17 at the New School. Printmaking techniques would become an integral part of her practice, even when making unique works. Through Hayter, who was experimenting with “plaster prints,” Dienes began using cast plaster to create prints as well, eventually forgoing the printing process and showing plaster low-relief sculptures that included collage elements such as rope and wood.
In 1955, Dienes created an installation of plaster collages and sidewalk rubbings in the windows of department store Bonwit Teller. She was invited by Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Gene Moore, who were working as window dressing designers, joining a lineage that had famously included Salvador Dalí in the late 1920s, and which would help launch the career of Andy Warhol in 1961. In these works, Dienes incorporated multiple experimental techniques, combining print transfers and dripped ink atop scraped and indented surfaces embedded with found materials. The plaster supports assume varying organic shapes, in keeping with Dienes’s philosophy that artmaking is about discovery rather than conception.
