In order to build power for our people, we have to build power outside of the political structures that have proven to us they aren’t necessarily there to support us. Tennessee Lawmakers have approved a new map that now limits Black voting power in Tennessee. It is even more crucial right now that we look to people’s power to make collective decisions that our community members actually want and need. We encourage you to stay politically engaged and also join us at our May Mass meeting. Register at the link in the bio.
During a time when our votes are being suppressed it is even more important for us to have those same conversations in the South. Some moments from our Executive Director Erica Perry, speaking at The City Is Ours: Law, Direct Democracy, and Radical Municipalism in Practice Symposium in NYC.
Join us for our Mass Meeting on May 30th to hear how we can put into practice what Erica discussed in New York City here in Nashville Tennessee. Register at the link in the bio.

At the heart of movement journalism is building solidarity between movement journalists and movement organizers to advance justice and liberation. We asked Southern organizers who inspire us to share their wisdom by answering the question: How can journalists be accountable to grassroots justice movements?
Erica R. Perry (she/her) @ericarperry_ , executive director at Southern Movement Committee @southernmovementco , says:
“Journalists can be accountable to grassroots justice movements by showing up with curiosity and political clarity and grounding their stories in the dignity and humanity of all people, especially those most impacted by systemic harm.
Journalists must realize that journalism is not neutral. Therefore journalists must confront racist, homophobic, transphobic, sexist, classist, and xenophobic values and principles to be accountable to grassroots justice movements.
Finally, a significant step to being accountable is building relationships with grassroots justice organizers and leaders where journalists make themselves open to the long-term process of building trust and the critique, calling in, and feedback that sustain interdependent relationships.”

What harms one of us, harms us all. From gun violence, to violence against women, to attacks on immigrant families, these systems are all connected and they share a common root. In 2026, solidarity isn’t optional and it is important that we keep our momentum and organize for policies that truly matter to our communities.
