Fun morning at the @beyondsurfleague contest. Glad to finally be shooting a contest again. Everyone was ripping! Here’s some of my favorite frames from the morning. Tag them if you know em! #surf #surfcompetition #southerncalifornia #surfingphotography #sonyalpha

Now to talk a little bit about what went into this shot. I am a big fan of clouds. I love the dynamic movement, the contrast, the different types, the way the light can have such a profound effect on how they look. I feel like every cloud has the potential to be its own little work of art. I also love the ocean. Having been raised in San Diego, the sea was always close by and I think over the years I have started to take that for granted a little bit. But recently I have been trying to be a little bit more aware and mindful of just how fortunate I am to have grown up calling San Diego my home. For this series I was inspired by the natural beauty that is everywhere in San Diego. Double exposures were done in camera by shooting a roll 1-2 stops underexposed, then taking the film out a re-rolling it in either a darkroom or a film changing bag. I didn’t plan out which frames would align with one another, instead I chose to embrace the Bob Ross mentality of “Happy Little Accidents” and I loved the results (however I am excited to eventually start experimenting with large format film cameras and some more intentionality). Film photography helps remind me what I love about taking photos as well as creating art in general and I am excited to see what I can make in 2026. Better late than never I guess… 2025 was certainly one of the years of all time. There were certainly some ups. First and most importantly, my girlfriend and I got 2 kittens, which add so much to our lives. I participated in my first art show as part of my final for my Art 507: Black and White Photography II at @sdsu_art taught by the phenomenal @cjheyliger (best photography professor I have ever had, cannot sing his praises enough). With his encouragement I was able to create some of the strongest work I have had the opportunity to create so far, which felt amazing. I graduated from @sdsu Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication and a Art Minor with an emphasis in Photography. It was way too long coming but we finally crossed that finish line. Then I went to Japan with a great group of friends as well as my wonderful girlfriend @karlenaogden . Unfortunately that was more or less the extent of the pros. The cons column is sizable. The world kind of feels like it is falling apart. I am cursed with a personal obligation to follow the news and there isn’t too much good, unfortunately. The job search after college has presented its own set of struggles. I had an inkling while getting my degree that it wouldn’t be the “golden ticket” to gainful employment that I was told it would be. Unfortunately, that turned out to be the case and the job search after graduation is uhhhh… not great. One more pro is that I finally feel ready to be posting again on @instagram . I am proud of how far I have come as a photographer and I feel like I am finally ready to show my art to the world again.
