When so many comedians around the world choose to focus on performing in English and seeking fame and glory, it seems insane to do the opposite. But I’ve tried stand-up in six languages and have found it rewarding in ways I did NOT expect – even when you’re not fluent 🤓
Here is what it offered me - what has it offered you?
🗣️ Language Study. Stand-up hits all the language learning skills by requiring you to practice speaking, writing, reading and listening. It wasn’t until I sat down to write jokes in Japanese last April that I actually started remembering the Japanese I learned 20 years ago. It’s SUPER effective.
✍️ Joke Improvement. Sometimes when I translate a joke into another language, I suddenly see a new punchline. Or a way to word the joke more nicely. AND THE TAGS OH THE TAGS. Every language you speak is a way to get outside of your head and see new ways to punch up your jokes.
🎆 Being Part of the Revolution. Stand-up has caught on fire around the world for a reason – it allows people to interrogate culture, current events, and the nonsense we call life. This desire transcends countries and cultures, which is why there is stand-up in every country I visit performed by people from all walks of life. I want to bear witness to the movement, to laugh at jokes that can never be told in English, and encourage others to claim their own voice.
🎤 Getting Stage Time. Sorry, we are all mercenaries.
🙏 Giving Back. I’ve lived outside the US for 14 years, in countries where people have shown me many kindnesses I didn’t (and don’t) deserve. Making them laugh is a small way to give back for the suffering they had to endure in interacting with me, an idiot.
