Thinking about corrugation structures lately and folded this little sample of an interesting pattern. I’m curious to see how much complexity can be packed into a linear corrugation pattern while still retaining flat-foldability.
I like how it has little rectangular frames that collapse ;)

JOSEF ALBERS - crease pattern
—from a visit I made to the Albers Foundation archives two years ago. The master himself drew this CP, and you’ll note his use of “RED = POSITIVE” / “BLUE = NEGATIVE”- just in case you were curious how people diagrammed tessellations 100 years ago :)
This was the only pattern I found in all of the many boxes of material, thanks to the kindness of Fritz Horstmann at the Albers Foundation for the invite and guided tour!

This building block allows for some complex outcomes at scale. Been mulling this over with a 2m prototype living on my wall for 2 years now. Finally had a flash of visualization for a good use of its peculiar properties. Going to save it for the long winter to come as I expect it will take ages to fold :)

Remembering this time 8 years ago when I spent 3 months folding the largest work I’ve ever made. It’s still with me, after a lot of global travel and exhibitions, and will be included in my upcoming book. I used to say I’d never make anything so large or complex ever again, but I’ve learned to never say never. Let’s see what this new decade will bring.
