Black clouds covering the skyline. Oil and ash raining down on the streets. Cars coated in dark, oil-saturated water. The Iranian Red Crescent warning citizens that if the rain touches their skin it could cause chemical burns. Residents told to stay indoors and avoid breathing the air outside.
This is what happened after airstrikes hit fuel storage facilities across the city. Toxic hydrocarbons, sulfur, and nitrogen oxides are now in the atmosphere over a capital city of 9 million people.
And it gets worse. pH tests are showing the freshwater supply is turning acidic. Oil and ash are leaking into the city’s water system. The Red Crescent says the corrosion to water and sewage pipes could be a problem for generations.

Iran has 90 million people, one of the most educated populations in the Middle East, enough oil and gas to be a top 5 global economy, and a geographic position that literally connects half the world’s trade routes.
This country should be rich. Absurdly rich.
Instead, a regime ran the country into the ground for 45 years. Poured money into proxy wars across the region, threatened to annihilate its neighbors on a regular basis, killed its own people every time they had the nerve to protest, and wrecked the economy so thoroughly that the rial became practically worthless.
If this regime actually falls and what replaces it isn’t just a reshuffled version of the same thing, Iran can become one of the biggest economic stories of our lifetime.
