Sports Bras, Cheerleading, and Drag: Ohio House Republicans have advanced HB 249 that could criminalize it all. 📣
It does so by replacing the key term “private parts” with “private area,” a term defined to include the genitals, pubic area, buttocks, or breasts “where nude or covered by an undergarment.” That means criminal liability would no longer depend on actual exposure or visibility of particular body parts and would instead include completely covered areas as well — depending on the type of clothing covering them.
This legal language is an *intentional* soft launch to further police all of our lives, cultures, and bodies. Imagine being told your sports look is offensive simply because someone doesn’t like your body type, shape, color or presentation? Many in our community remember the “decency laws” historically used to marginalize, criminalize, and censor LGBTQ+ individuals and communities.
“Leaders within our Statehouse should be focusing on much more pressing issues, like the housing and education crisis,” said Dwayne Steward. “Extremist legislators criminalizing clothing—and targeting far more than just LGBTQ+ people—is no surprise. Especially during primary season, when religious extremist groups wield outsized influence.”
We will now take this fight to the Senate. We are not going back.
