Introducing “Before We Go”: Empowering Families with Autism Through Visual Stories Meet Sanjaya, a dedicated father who understands the challenges of preparing his non-verbal son, Vinuk, for daily activities. Like many parents of children with autism, Sanjaya needed a quick and effective way to show Vinuk what to expect before heading out. This need led him to create “Before We Go,” an innovative app designed to simplify the process of creating social stories. “Before We Go” allows parents to quickly generate visual schedules using photos, helping children with autism understand and anticipate upcoming events. The app is designed to be user-friendly, enabling parents to create stories on their phones in moments, addressing the common issue of time constraints. Whether it’s a trip to the dentist or a visit to the park, “Before We Go” helps reduce anxiety and promote smoother transitions by providing a familiar visual guide. Sanjaya collaborated with Vinuk’s speech therapist to ensure the app meets the specific needs of children with autism, incorporating features like a calendar view for those who understand weekly schedules and a streamlined day view for daily activities. “Before We Go” is more than just an app; it’s a tool that empowers parents to plan their week, schedule activities, and reuse stories, making every outing a little easier and a lot more predictable for their children.

IDENTITY-FIRST OR PERSON-FIRST? Autistic Person “Autistic” describes a person’s identity. Puts the focus on accepting autism as part of the person. Many autistic people prefer this. Emphasises that autism is an integral part of who they are, not something separate. Person with Autism “Autism” describes a condition someone has. The person is separate from the diagnosis. Some people prefer this. Some feel it avoids defining a person solely by their diagnosis. Important Note: Preferences vary widely within the autistic community. It’s always best to ask individuals what they prefer.

We’re thrilled to announce that Peter Cornell, a gifted self-taught fine artist, has generously donated an original painting to Equal Access for Autism (EAFA)! Peter’s dedication to using his art for meaningful causes is truly inspiring. His painting will be proudly displayed at the Haven in Preston when our centre opens later this year. Peter’s art is driven by a desire to uplift charities and transform lives, and we’re incredibly grateful that he chose to support EAFA.
