A synapse is the space between neurons, brain cells. It’s where a connection takes or does not take place. Synapses are key factors in promoting organized life and communication between neurons, organs, organisms.
Trained as a neuroscientist and biologist, artist Eugenia Patsouri’s SYNAPSE is a set of books, index and a print in a box, based on the world of a single photograph.
“Working with a single source image was a certain kind of investigation. This was an image I shot in a place that I often go back to, for the first time for some reason I decided to use the camera’s timer to take the picture. I just saw the man’s silhouette, set the frame and quickly jumped in to mirror his body language - we never exchanged a word”.

SYNAPSE comes in the form of a box containing; six hand assembled books
(SYNAPSE 1,2,3,4,6,8 indicating the number of unique versions each book holds), an index where all sequenced versions can be seen and an enveloped unique print of one of 24 image versions.

Μια σύναψη είναι ο χώρος μεταξύ των νευρώνων, των εγκεφαλικών κυττάρων. Εκεί όπου μια σύνδεση πραγματοποιείται — ή όχι. Οι συνάψεις αποτελούν βασικούς παράγοντες για την οργάνωση της ζωής και την επικοινωνία μεταξύ νευρώνων, οργάνων και οργανισμών.
Η καλλιτέχνης Eugenia Patsouri, εκπαιδευμένη ως νευροεπιστήμονας και βιολόγος, παρουσιάζει το έργο SYNAPSE, ένα σύνολο από βιβλία, έναν δείκτη και ένα τύπωμα μέσα σε κουτί, βασισμένα στον κόσμο μιας και μόνο φωτογραφίας.
«Η εργασία πάνω σε μια μοναδική πηγή εικόνας ήταν μια μορφή έρευνας. Πρόκειται για μια φωτογραφία που τράβηξα σε έναν τόπο όπου επιστρέφω συχνά. Για πρώτη φορά, για κάποιο λόγο, αποφάσισα να χρησιμοποιήσω το χρονοδιακόπτη της κάμερας. Είδα απλώς τη σιλουέτα του άντρα, έστησα το κάδρο και έτρεξα γρήγορα να μπω μέσα, μιμούμενη τη στάση του σώματός του — δεν ανταλλάξαμε ποτέ κουβέντα».
Το SYNAPSE παρουσιάζεται σε μορφή κουτιού που περιέχει: έξι χειροποίητα βιβλία
(SYNAPSE 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, που υποδεικνύουν τον αριθμό των μοναδικών εκδοχών που περιλαμβάνει κάθε βιβλίο), έναν δείκτη όπου φαίνονται όλες οι ακολουθίες των εκδοχών, και ένα μοναδικό τύπωμα (από τις 24 διαφορετικές εκδοχές της εικόνας) μέσα σε φάκελο.

Review of @eps_ilon new book Synapse, published @s_u_n_ is up now on @americansuburbx This project was developed in the Nearest Truth Year-Long photobook program. It is a limited edition artist book, and it should be read with the intention of experimentation and the will to deconstruct the photographic image and our collective insistence that a photobook tells us something about the world with specificity. It is playful and deserves attention for the envelope the artist wants to push. I am partial in reviewing the work as I helped develop it. It is an encouraging note from a young artist that there is value in simplicity and the analog tradition of photography and, by proxy, the photobook form. Uncomplicated by the rules of contemporary art, Patsouri has found a way to examine the medium at its fundament, which is a fantastic quality to observe. We should pay more attention to artists coming to photography from the outside and herald their efforts a bit more, as there is value in being unmoored by a system of critique, market, and ideological governance in these positions.
