The James Baldwin Library in winter.
The Library holds the collection of over 100 years of MacDowell Fellows – poetry, prose, compositions, scores, films, visual art, and more and provides a warm and inviting space for reading, research, and communal presentations.
In 2013, an addition by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects expanded the original 1927 one-room Savidge Library.
@reedhilderbrand designed the landscape, with EP’s
@josephadamjames serving as project architect. The project created a clearing within a stand of red pines, situating the building in a meadow punctuated with birches and maples. The entry terrace embraces the original materiality of the Savidge, weaving in the modern expression of the addition.
After a dozen years, it was a true pleasure to return as a fellow at
@macdowell1907 and enjoy daily life at the Library, exploring the works of the collection, creating drawings in the study spaces, and relaxing in the warmth of the building and its outdoor fireplace. It’s a special gift to be able to live with a previous project and see how the landscape spaces change from sunrise to sunset, how they come to life with animals, and how their bones are revealed in winter.
