Two men from Sunderland have landed fines and costs totalling over £1,250 for fishing illegally in the River Wear at Stanhope in Upper Weardale. The River Wear is one of the best sea trout and salmon rivers in England. Darren Lascelles, 50, of Cheltenham Road and Ben Thomas Taylor, 43, of Kingsland Square have been successfully prosecuted by the Environment Agency for using an unlicenced gill fishing net. Gill nets are constructed of fine monofilament netting mesh or similar and work by entangling the gills and fins of fish such as salmon and sea trout, which were the likely targets in this case. While the pair only caught one sea trout on this occasion, using the illegal net could have been deadly to anything – including other wildlife - that got entangled in it. Fisheries enforcement officers continue to patrol rivers across the Northeast. They will take the strongest possible enforcement actions against anyone found to be fishing unlawfully. If you spot illegal fishing, report it to our 24/7 hotline on 0800 807060.

The wait is over. The clean-up starts now ⌛ Roughly 21,000 tonnes of illegal waste will be removed from Kidlington over the next six months, helping restore the area for local communities. As waste is removed from the site, we are continuing to progress our investigation into the illegal dumping at Kidlington – this type of crime will not go unpunished, and we will bring those responsible to justice.

Last week, the JUWC were out with Kent Police and DVSA following intelligence of a new illegal waste site. One male was arrested and a 28-day notice to clear the site was also issued. The operators have now cleared all vehicles, plants, and skips from the site. Next week, the JUWC will return to check that the waste is also being legally cleared from the site.

Event Duration Monitoring (EDM) helps #TeamEA monitor storm overflow spills across England. Join David, one of our Environment Officers, as he explains how EDM works. EDM data lets us hold water companies to account and take action where they break the law. Publishing this data each year means the public can see clearly what is happening across England’s storm overflows, with 2025 showing fewer and shorter spills. Read more at the link in bio.
