We’re devastated by the sudden loss of our dear dear friend, magnificent colleague, saxophonist extraordinaire Erik-Jan de With. Words can’t fill this unexpected void. We’ve had more than 20 years of playing side-by-side in Ensemble Klang, which he co-founded. But many of us were friends and colleagues with Erik-Jan for many years before that, dating back to our high-school days. We shared graduations, moving in to first homes, relationships blossoming, and relationships passing, marriages, kids, more kids, but above all a profound love of music. Just across the last few weeks we shared the stage with him for a number of thrilling concerts and radio recordings, doing what he loved. Erik-Jan’s passion was not only for the playing, but also for the camaraderie of ensembles. He brought a genuinely warm and kind presence to touring and to those precious back-stage moments pre- and post-concert. These last few weeks he was in top musical form, and full of happiness and enthusiasm for projects to come. Erik-Jan was a life-long advocate of the saxophone, building new contemporary repertoire for the instrument. He performed as a soloist in venues from the Concertgebouw Amsterdam to Long Play Festival New York. He championed the saxophone in all its forms (from sopranino down to tubax), and in all its many ensembles, from sax quartet to sax orchestra, jazz band to wind orchestra. His passion covered many musical genres and styles, and took in work with young musicians, amateurs as well as professional ensembles and orchestras. He premiered works by countless composers, from Louis Andriessen to Éliane Radigue, and assembled a meticulous archive of saxophone repertoire, with recordings, dates, performers and sheet music. His enthusiasm kindled a passionate musical community in his home town of The Hague, neighbouring Westland, around his countryside retreat in Hoenderloo, and further afield. Erik-Jan passed away suddenly, last weekend, at the age of 48. He’ll be deeply missed by family, friends, and colleagues. Erik-jan, we will miss you immensely. Your spirit will always be with us.

✨Work in progress! Work was still in full swing here on this unique installation; tonight, the final result will be on display for the first time! ✨ Today and tomorrow we’re performing Occam Delta XXIII and Occam Hexa V by Eliane Radigue and Carol Robinson five times at the @minimalmusicfestival in Amsterdam. What makes these performances extra special is that you can also experience the premiere of the installation Everything is Vibration especially created for these works by lighting designer Pavla Beranova, @beranova269 Everything is Vibration works with the quivering of black mirrored surfaces, bringing into play both the surrounding space and the sound that inhabits it. It engages with daylight and its transformations over the course of the day. Certain frequencies in Radigue’s music set the black surfaces into vibration, like the surface of water. This installation explores the idea that much of what surrounds us — especially light and sound — exists, at its core, as waves. What we perceive as stable, solid, or continuous is in fact in constant motion, unfolding through patterns of oscillation and rhythm. Pavla Beranova developed the concept together with sound artist Jiri Y. Suchanek and sound designer @michadekanter Minimal Music Festival, Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ Friday 17 April 6 PM | OCCAM DELTA XXIII (sold out) 7.30 PM | OCCAM HEXA V (final tickets) Saturday 18 April 1 PM | OCCAM DELTA XXIII (sold out) 4 PM | OCCAM HEXA V (final tickets) 7.30 PM | OCCAM DELTA XXIII

Five concerts at the @minimalmusicfestival (17 & 18 April), one at @rewirefestival (10 April), and we’ll round off the series with a performance at @amaredenhaag (22 April). On a day when we would normally have been celebrating Erik-Jan de With’s birthday, we are using this moment, with Erik-Jan in our thoughts, to announce a new Ensemble Klang project revolving around the saxophone. A project that was close to his heart and which he himself had set in motion before his passing. It's a project that seeks to encourage playing the saxophone how Erik-Jan wanted to play and hear the saxophone, where every note is imbued with a profound life force. This has been long in the works, and it allows us to continue sharing his passion and knowledge for the saxophone, with a focus on the rather particular sound (and repertoire) that's built up around its performers and composers in The Hague. Erik-Jan had collated a fantastic catalogue of contemporary saxophone repertoire, across the whole family of instruments, and in a multitude of combinations with other instruments and electronics. Across the coming years, together with our fantastic saxophonists Michiel van Dijk, @daan_v_koppen & @nuno.silva33 and in collaboration with a new generation of performers and composers, we get to explore that repertoire. We're looking forward to uncovering some classic, but sometimes, forgotten works, commissioning brand new works, and playing it all imbued with that profound life force that is still so connected to Erik-Jan. We’ll keep you updated on the developments, but we can already tell you that the first concerts are likely to take place in May this year. Watch this space.
