N. Does it stand for “New”, for “Now”, for…? It may do, although other layers of meaning remain essential to this point-symmetric shape. N as a pure form – abstract, just as contemporary music sometimes is. Or – comparable to Merleau-Ponty’s image of consciousness as a fold in the world’s fabric – as a fold in time’s fabric , which only exists in the present: it is indeed a “Now”, discovering and creating “New” things, before the fabric smooths out again.

We’re Ensemble N, a contemporary ensemble based in Vienna but with roots all over Europe.
Our main focus is premiering new music by young professional composers who share our connection to Vienna, and we work hard on programming concerts and mixing pieces that are relevant and meaningful in today’s (musical) landscape.

Step into a concert where sound meets sight. This program explores the dynamic relationship between music and visual expression, with each piece revealing layers of imagery embedded within the composition itself—like musical palimpsests waiting to be discovered.
