New Forest Ponies are born and bred on the Forest, they have all the natural food they need here already. We remind visitors that it’s a finable offence to pet, feed or leave food out for the ponies or donkeys. 🐴 πŸ”— See link in bio to find out more #CareForTheForest

We had a surprise visit to a New Forest stream recently. This footage of a Razorbill was captured on one of our trail cameras beside a raft which is used to monitor the presence of wildlife in the area. It's possible that it was just taking a rest after some weather pushed it off course. The Razorbill is a coastal seabird that nests on ledges and among rocks at the bottom of cliffs and it would usually be found in marine or intertidal water.

Our rangers joined local police and partners this week to help tackle fly-tipping in the #NewForest. A joint operation stopped vehicles carrying waste to check they had the correct licences to do so. Two of the drivers that were stopped didn’t have a waste carriers licence and will now need to purchase one within the next 14 days or they will be fined. If you are arranging for anyone to take away waste you can check they are registered to do so on the Environment Agency website. Thanks to everyone helping to reduce fly-tipping in this special place πŸ™

From 11 May stallions will be turned out in the New Forest. The following six weeks will be an important period for the ponies and during the breeding season animals may behave unpredictably and cross roads at speed. 🐎 To help keep everyone safe, and the ponies, please keep your distance. If you want a photo use a zoom and please keep dogs under close control. πŸ™

As we begin to welcome new born foals in the Forest we’re reminding people to be responsible and take extra care while out and about, or on the roads. 🐴 Enjoy the moment by keeping your distance. If you want a photo use a zoom and please keep dogs under close control. πŸ™

Between January and March this year volunteers have been busy helping us in the New Forest to improve habitat for butterflies, specifically the White Admiral. Using hand tools to cut birch, pine and willow, they've helped clear and widen areas to allow more light to the forest floor to help promote the growth of flora. Keeping rides and glades open also assists butterfly recorders on official transects. #Volunteering #OurWork #NewForest

The curlew's mottled brown and grey plumage is beautifully camouflaged amongst the heathland vegetation where they nest. With its long-curved bill and long bluish legs it is one of the largest waders in Europe. As a globally threatened species the curlew is classed as red-listed, which is the highest conservation priority. The New Forest is a Special Protection Area (SPA) for birds with suitable habitat for many rare and endangered species and is one of only a few areas in south-east England where curlew breed. πŸ”— See link in bio to find out more about #GroundNestingBirds #WorldCurlewDay πŸ“· Roger Wilmhurst

We care for around half of the #NewForest National Park. This includes 85% of the areas's green space accessible to the public, and many internationally important habitats and species. Our work includes tree planting, conservation, managing vegetation, restoring heathlands and rivers. We provide many miles of paths and cycle routes, 10 campsites, and 129 car parks. Our rangers patrol the area every day of the year and help address anti-social behaviour. We currently receive less than 20% of our core funding from the government with the rest having to be found from our own activities including timber sales and car parking charges. For several years now the costs of our work here has been much greater than the income we are able to generate. Parking charges will be introduced at our New Forest car parks on 20 April. The funds raised by this will help to ensure that people can continue to enjoy this special place and avoid the closure of trails and car parks. It will provide more sustainable funding to help us look after the landscape and maintain facilities. The scheme will also significantly boost the numbers of rangers on patrol to look after the Forest and help address growing anti-social behaviours, and update ageing visitor infrastructure. Everyone paying to park will be helping to look after this very special place. Thank you. For more details on parking in the New Forest can be found on our website. πŸ”— See link in bio
