아이들이 잠든 밤, 이도는 가끔 작은 목소리로 나를 부른다. “엄마… 저기 뭐가 있는 거 같아요.” 불을 다 끈 방의 구석, 옷걸이에 걸린 옷 그림자, 창밖의 나무가 흔들리는 모양, 커튼이 살짝 흔들리는 자리. 어른의 눈에는 아무것도 아닌 그곳에 이도의 세계에서는 분명 무언가가 있다.
나는 그럴 때마다 이도 옆에 눕거나, 방문 앞을 서성이거나, 이도의 옆에 누워 아직도 작은 손을 꼭 잡아 준다. (…) 이번 작품 속 어미 곰은 캄캄한 어둠 속에서 무언가를 마주하고 앞으로 나선 채로 서 있다. (…) 아기 곰이 무서워하던 그 무언가가 어떤 모습이든, 어미 곰은 그저 앞에 서 있다. 겁나지 않아서가 아니라, 겁이 나도 서 있는 쪽을 택한 어른의 모습이다.
나도 어릴 때 무서운 것이 무척 많았다. 그때 나를 지켜 준 수많은 것들의 밤이 있었을 것이다. (…) 오늘 밤도 이도가 좋은 꿈을 꾸길 바란다. 꿈속에서 무서운 게 나와도, 든든한 어떤 존재가 앞에 당당히 서 있다는 걸 알았으면 좋겠다. 깨어나서 잊어버려도 괜찮으니, 잠든 동안만큼은 아주 푹신하고 따뜻한 곳에 있기를.

At night, after the children have fallen asleep, It’s Ido sometimes calls out to me in a small voice. “Mom… I think there’s something over there.”
The dark corner of a room with all the lights turned off, the shadow of clothes hanging on a rack, the shape of trees swaying outside the window, the spot where the curtain moves ever so slightly. To an adult’s eyes, it is nothing at all, but in Ido’s world, there is clearly something there.
Whenever that happens, I lie down beside Ido, linger by the bedroom door, or hold her still-small hand tightly as I lie next to her. (…) In this piece, the mother bear stands facing something in the pitch-dark night, stepping forward to confront it. (…) Whatever it is that frightened the baby bear, the mother bear simply stands in front of it. Not because she is unafraid, but because even in fear, she chooses to stand her ground. It is the image of an adult who stands firm despite being scared.
When I was young, I was frightened by so many things too. Back then, there must have been countless nights shaped by the things that protected me. (…) Tonight as well, I hope Ido has sweet dreams. Even if something frightening appears in those dreams, I hope she knows there is a strong and dependable presence standing bravely before her. And even if she forgets it by morning, that is alright — as long as, while she sleeps, she can rest in a place that feels soft, warm, and safe.
