The @enfielddispatch has a helpful article about the implications for our Borough following the Council going to no overall control. The article includes quotes from various new councillors and asks questions about the future for the Spurs proposals at Whitewebbs and the threats to our Green Belt.
Chase Green Millennium Fountain planted to mark Society’s 90th anniversary
The millennium fountain in Chase Green Gardens has not worked for some time and the Council do not have the resources to repair it. The sundial itself obviously still works, as there are no moving parts except the sun itself. At a recent regular meeting with the Council Leader, The Society raised concerns about the poor state of the water feature. As a result the Society has worked with Council Officers and the Gentleman’s Row Residents’ Association and the agreed plan was to plant-up the fountain to make it more attractive. The work is part of the Society’s 90th Celebrations, of which more is to be announced soon. (Photo credit AL & KA)
Love these views over Crews Hill and don't want to see them covered in brick & concrete?
The Enfield Society has been working with Enfield RoadWatch in objecting to the proposed New Town at Crews Hill and Chase Park (aka Vicarage Farm). We are calling on residents who also object to the plan to sign a letter which will be delivered to the Prime Minister in early May.
Please visit us at our stall outside Barclays Bank in Enfield town this Saturday, 25th April, between 10am and 2pm. You’ll be able to talk to us about the proposals and sign a copy of the letter.
NB If you can't make down on Saturday, you can email the PM directly via the Enfield RoadWatch website /email-the-prime-minister/
Today, April 18th, was a ‘day of action’ organised by Enfield RoadWatch and Action for Enfield’s Future to draw attention to the planned 21,000 homes New Town in our Borough. As well as giving such scant information about the plan as is available, the public were able to sign a letter to be delivered to the Prime Minister, to learn about the local election on the 7th May, visit the Golf Course clubhouse which was welcoming guests and pick up walk leaflets which allow an exploration of the area by foot. Thank you to the many, many people who stopped by the stall to show their support!
Massive congratulations to our very own Dave Cockle on receiving an Enfield Lifetime Achievement & Special Recognition Volunteer Award 🎉
Dave was one of 36 amazing volunteers recognised by Enfield Council for going above and beyond to support others in the community. These awards celebrate people who have shown real dedication whether through years of service or making a big impact more recently.
Winners were chosen from nominations made by local residents, community groups and voluntary organisations, which makes this recognition even more special
The ceremony took place on 20 March at Enfield Civic Centre, where all the winners were presented with certificates and medals.
We’re so proud of everything Dave has done, this is so well deserved. People like him are what make our community such a great place to be 😊

*This global World Wide Fund for Nature event marks its 20th anniversary this year, inviting millions to switch off non-essential lights to raise awareness for nature conservation, biodiversity loss, and climate change.
Enfield has been named among the government’s seven confirmed locations for its ‘new towns’ programme – with a public consultation set to launch soon. The New Towns Taskforce had named twelve potential new towns, but the government has confirmed over the weekend that it is only taking seven forward to the next stage. This could means up to 21,000 homes built across a large swathe of Metropolitan Green Belt at Crews Hill and ‘Chase Park’, an area better known locally as Vicarage Farm. Read the full story in the Enfield Dispatch: /government-confirms-crews-hill-as-one-of-seven-new-towns/
Enfield RoadWatch are organising a number of events in and around Crews Hill on Saturday 18th April as part of a ‘Day of Action’ called by the Community Planning Alliance in cooperation with CPRE – the Countryside Charity. The purpose is simple: to demonstrate, visibly and collectively, that people everywhere care deeply about the natural world and want to see it protected and restored. Events will take place all over the country.
Enfield RoadWatch will have a stall at Thompsons, Cattlegate Road, 10am - 4pm where you can speak to volunteers about the threat to our countryside from the so-called “Crews Hill and Chase Park” New Town. Please visit them so they can brief you about the New Town, give advice on local countryside walks, and introduce you to a Crews Hill you may not have known was there!
More information has now been made available about the extent of housing development being proposed for Palace Garden, Enfield town. The developer is keen to point out how these proposals are quite different to the 2020 plan for a 26-storey tower block (the latter is outlined in red in their mock-up shown) but nonetheless reveal that 15 storeys (potentially 45m) are being proposed in one location at the centre of the development, with five lower blocks elsewhere on the site. At this height, this would be the tallest building in Enfield Town.
You can find out more about the proposals & meet some of the development team in person in the shopping precinct tomorrow (Saturday 7th) - or view the proposals online.
➡️ Lots more information and a link to the developer's website & consultation can be found on our website - .uk/news
🌼🏴 Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus! Happy St David’s Day to all Welsh exiles in Enfield, and Enfield exiles in Wales! 🏴🌼
As we celebrate Welsh heritage today, we’re reminded of the rich and sometimes surprising stories uncovered on recent walks with The Enfield Society — including our exploration of Vicars Moor Lane, Winchmore Hill where an unassuming former Baptist chapel revealed a dramatic past of smugglers, dissenting religion, and a Welsh family who founded their own sect, the Udallites (see /the-welsh-smugglers-who-founded-a-winchmore-hill-chapel if you want to know more!)
A future walk: Tuesday 17 March – Enfield’s New Town site
• Two-hour linear walk (shorter option available)
• Paths and tracks through open countryside, scenic landscapes and a golf course
• Meet 10.30am at Gordon Hill Station
• Coffee and toilets available
• Walk leader: Mick Spinks
History under our feet, stories around every corner — look out for more walks from the Enfield Society.
The second phase of the Palace Gardens development consultation is being launched next week.
DWS and RivingtonHark will provide more details of their proposals to improve the shopping centre and add in residential units along Cecil Road; submitting a planning application by the summer.
There are two public drop-in events:
Wednesday 4th March 3pm-7pm
Saturday 7th March 10am -2pm
Venue: the former Sony unit, opposite Monsoon
The online survey for residents and businesses to provide feedback will open on Wednesday 4th March and will run until Saturday 21st March.
