At 9 years old, Nick had a brain tumor that crushed his optical nerve and he permanently lost his eyesight. At the same time, he was diagnosed with a form of cancer called neuroblastoma.
We met Nick and his mother in 2012 when they become beneficiaries of
@enduretocure 's programs. In the months and years that followed our first meeting, E2C founder
@jasonsissel visited Nick in the hospital during his inpatient stays at
@tuftsmedicalcenter and got to know him pretty well. He was intrigued by Nick’s passion for life despite the challenges he faced.
During one of their conversations, Jay asked Nick what drives him to still do things like downhill ski. His response: "I refuse to let cancer rule my life and I am not going to sit around feeling sorry for myself. I want to continue doing the things I love so I just learned how to do them a little differently than when I had eyesight. I love to ski, I enjoy hiking and indoor rock climbing; someday I want to climb a mountain." (!!) Jay told him that the next time he visited, hewould bring Nick a rock from the summit of Kilimanjaro from one of my previous climbs to use as inspiration to keep fighting and a reminder that when he beats brain cancer, they would climb that mountain together.
Fast forward to 2018: Nick crushed that brain cancer and, after a year of planning, on January 1st, 2019, Jay will be leading Nick up to the Roof of Africa. If things go as planned, we will summit Mt. Kilimanjaro on January 7th, 2019.
Nick says, "I want to climb the mountain so that I can be a hero to somebody else who is in the position I was in." To make that happen, we are working to create a mini documentary on Nick's extraordinary story. We believe his story is one every child facing cancer and their family can be inspired by. This climb inspired us to forge new partnerships with children’s hospitals to assist families financially struggling due to pediatric cancer.
If you are inspired by Nick’s story or would like to support our efforts to help kids in cancer treatment through E2C's programs, we would appreciate your support (link in bio) and/or simply sharing Nick's remarkable story with friends/family.
