La Costa Heights students joined Principal Heidi Galassi at the April board meeting to present on the power of student-led clubs. From crochet, chess, and theater, to Lunch & Lead, students are turning their interests into spaces where connection and belonging can thrive. One of their most popular clubs, the Smoothie Love Club, gives students the chance to engage in acts of kindness by making and delivering smoothies to LCH staff. This innovative leadership opportunity not only boosts staff moral, but allows students to see the power of kindness in action! These inspiring initiatives showcase a culture of joy on campus, while helping students grow as empowered learners, confident collaborators, wellness advocates, and skilled communicators. 💙 Swipe left to watch their presentation.

Mission Estancia Elementary’s 5th annual Maker Faire turned campus into a student-powered marketplace, where every learner stepped into the role of creator, entrepreneur, and problem-solver. This year’s expanded eight-week program gave students dedicated time in class to build real businesses that incorporated grade-level focus areas as a guide for products and creativity. It also provided a valuable opportunity for students to learn marketing, finance, and production skills. From student-made coloring books, dog treats, and tote bags, to student-grown plants, hand-crafted pottery and shell art, student innovation was on full display for families and the M.E. community. Beyond business, the impact of Maker Faire extended into the community. Students chose to donate proceeds from the day to the Helen Woodward Animal Center, San Diego Food Bank, and The Solana Center, putting a special purpose behind their work. The event reflects hands-on, student-driven learning that builds confidence, creativity, and meaningful decision-making. Shoutout to the teachers and staff at Mission Estancia for empowering students to see themselves as changemakers both in and beyond the classroom!

🫶Choose to include!!🫶 Assemblymember Tasha Boerner stopped by La Costa Heights to film a video with sixth-grade students who inspired her current legislative bill focused on building inclusive playgrounds. Last year, as fifth-graders, these students dove into real-world advocacy through an ambitious civic engagement project focused on building more inclusive playgrounds. After studying the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), surveying their own campus, visiting inclusive playgrounds, and consulting with local and national experts, students drafted a bill of their own: the California Inclusive Playgrounds Act (CIPA). Their work culminated in a trip to the California State Capitol, where they presented their proposal to Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber, Assemblymember Tasha Boerner, and Senator Catherine Blakespear. Their efforts recently reached an exciting milestone! On February 19, Assemblymember Boerner officially introduced the Inclusive Playground Act Bill, AB-2241, as part of the current California legislative session. The bill reflects months of student-led research, collaboration, and advocacy, born from their vision of creating playgrounds where all children are welcomed, celebrated, and encouraged to play. We look forward to following AB-2241 as it moves through the legislative process and celebrating the lasting impact of our student leaders! Stay tuned in the coming weeks to see the video about the bill from Assemblymember Boerner's office! This experience exemplifies the powerful, authentic learning happening across EUSD, where students are empowered to lead with empathy, engage in innovative thinking, and see firsthand that their voices matter.
