At Tokyo Nominoichi, I’ll be unveiling a new sculptural series titled “SU-SU” for the first time.
“SU-SU” is a series of sculptures created from leftover wood pieces that emerge as “unused parts” during the lumber milling process.
Rather than hiding marks that would normally be removed or discarded — such as scratches, bark, knots, and stains — I embraced the unique character of each material and allowed the wood itself to guide the work.
The title “SU-SU” comes from the Japanese word “素” (“su”), meaning raw, natural, or unrefined.
Without over-carving or over-polishing, the works retain the roughness and imperfections of the wood itself.
By accepting the traces and history carried within the material, each piece is transformed through EMU’s perspective into a new existence.
Wild, slightly uneven, and sometimes appearing unfinished —
but I believe there is a special beauty that can only emerge from this raw and honest state.
I’ll be bringing around 40 one-of-a-kind “SU-SU” works to the event.
Each sculpture will also come with a custom drawstring pouch made from leftover fabric.

東京蚤の市では、新たな彫刻作品「SU-SU」を初お披露目します。
「SU-SU」は、製材の過程で“使われない部分”として生まれた木材の端っこから制作した彫刻シリーズです。
傷、皮、節、シミなど、通常であれば削られたり捨てられてしまうような木材の表情をあえて隠さず、素材そのものが持つ個性を生かしながら制作しました。
シリーズタイトルの「SU-SU」は、「素」から名付けています。
削りすぎず、整えすぎず、木そのものの荒々しさや不完全さを残したまま、木が持っていた痕跡や過去も作品の一部として受け入れながら、EMUの視点で新たな存在へと生まれ変わらせています。
ワイルドで、少し不揃いで、未完成にも見える。
けれど、その“素”の状態だからこそ生まれる魅力があると思っています。
そんな一点物の作品達を40点ほど持っていきます。
「SU-SU」には残布で作った専用の巾着袋が付属されます。
