“Everyone here is not just one thing. You can love science and math, baseball and soccer, and the arts. You can try a little bit of everything. The arts are valued here; they are not just add-on classes—they are seen as essential, just like any other academic discipline, with excellence and intention.” — Artist and Middle and High Art Teacher, Malea Gascho

“That was actually so funny!” Overheard in the auditorium foyer after the opening night of Shakespeare’s Shorts, this year’s middle school play. Another parent chimed in, “My cheeks hurt from smiling so much during that performance! We definitely have some rising EMS stars among us.”
Douglas Alan Diehl directed his first play for EMS, although he is no stranger to theater, being a lifelong actor himself. Presenting “On With the Shrew!” along with a 15-minute version of Hamlet may have been seen as a challenge for middle schoolers, but Diehl had a different perspective. “So much of this show was driven by the kids; they had incredible, creative, and hilarious ideas, and I listened to them. We created a performance that they found funny, and it truly paid off.”
We can't wait to see what they do next. Congrats to our middle school actors!
