When it comes to karate, it’s no good just being technically proficient. If you haven’t got the right mindset, your techniques will suffer and you will not progress.
4 kinds of mindset
1) Shoshin (Beginner mindset) - This the open-minded attitude of being ready to learn, without any preconceived notions or judgements.
2) Mushin (No mind) - Mushin is about clearing your mind and focusing fully on that you are doing which means forgetting everything that’s going on outside the dojo.
3) Fudoshin (immovable mind) - This is the state of mind where you think, “I am going to do this and nothing will stand in my way.” No outside influences should affect your mind.
4) Zanshin (Remaining Mind) - Zanshin is about awareness. having an awareness of what is going on around you even though your focus is on your opponent or what you are doing.
We can achieve all these levels of mindset only through practice. By training both body and mind to be in sync with each other.

We had the pleasure of having one of our senior instructors Onuelu Kingsley Sensei (6th Dan) visit us and we looked at various kumite techniques.
The technique should be executed in a relaxed mode flowing from one technique to the other but with the core engaged all through. Be it punches or blocks the use of the core is very important and cannot be over emphasized.
