KMU ARCH STUDIO 8 WORK SHOP_2025 국민대학교 건축설계 학생들과 한 달간 워크숍을 진행했습니다. 나무라는 물성을 직접적으로 느낄 수 있도록 최대한 수공구 위주의 실습을 가졌습니다. 이번 워크숍에서는 ’불필요한 것을 만든다.‘라는 주제로 육면체의 덩어리에서 각자의 개성이 담긴 오브제가 됐습니다. 쉽지 않은 작업이었을 텐데 수고한 학생들에게 조금이나마 뿌듯함을 안겨주는 워크숍이었길 희망합니다. We held a one-month workshop with architecture students from Kookmin University. To help them directly experience the materiality of wood, the workshop focused heavily on hands-on practice using mostly hand tools. The theme of this workshop was ”Creating the unnecessary.“ Starting from a simple cube, each student crafted an object that reflected their own personality. It was not an easy task, but I hope the students found the workshop rewarding and left with a sense of pride in their hard work. #workshop #kmu #워크숍 #이목원

며칠을 주야간으로 바쁘게 움직이던 프로젝트가 하루아침에 바뀌는 계절 같이 변해버려 콧바람 쐐러 성수동에 다녀왔습니다. 사람 많은 곳을 싫어하는 성격이지만 앉아보고 싶은 마음이 더 크기에 다녀온 333 Chairs 전시는 직접 앉아볼 수 있다는 점이 아주 큰 매력입니다. 오리지널 피스를 눈으로 보는 것에서 떠나 직접 만져보고 앉아볼 수 있는 기회는 쉽게 찾아오지 않습니다. 이미 판매된 의자와 몇 개의 컨디션에 따른 의자 빼고는 웬만하면 다 앉아보고 왔습니다. 여러 번의 앉았다 일어서기를 반복하며 사진을 찍기보다 최대한 많은 엉덩이를 찍고 왔습니다. 의자는 앉으라고 만든 거니까요. 고맙습니다. 앤더슨 씨. After spending several days rushing around day and night on a project, everything changed overnight like the turning of seasons, so I took a breather and visited Seongsu-dong. Although I dislike crowded places, my desire to sit down was stronger, and the 333 Chairs exhibition I visited has a huge appeal in that you can actually sit in the chairs. It‘s not easy to find an opportunity to not only see original pieces with your eyes but also touch them and sit in them directly. Except for already sold chairs and a few chairs with condition issues, I managed to sit in most of them. While repeating the action of sitting down and getting up multiple times, rather than taking photos, I made sure to capture as many butts as possible. After all, chairs are made to be sat on. Student‘s work : BeamStand : Maple & Walnut : Oil finishing 맛있고 좋은 음식은 식재료가 무엇이냐로 결정되듯 가구에서 어떤 나무를 사용하느냐는 중요한 선택입니다. 이번 가구에서는 Maple burl을 찾기 위해 수강생들과 포천에 다녀왔습니다. 드넓은 공간에 나무만 빼곡히 쌓여있는 공간은 목수들에게 설렘을 줍니다. 수많은 나무를 하나씩 하나씩 꺼내어 보는 재미도 있습니다. 자유반 수강생들의 가구들을 보면 하나씩 늘어가는 가구만큼 생각과 행동이 점점 깊어가는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 점점 손이 많이 가는 가구를 만든다는 것입니다. 하지만 늘 그렇듯 노동처럼 느껴지기도 하는 가구를 만드는 과정은 마지막에 완성된 모습을 보면 힘들고 고된 과정이 다 잊히고 뿌듯함과 기쁨, 성취감과 같은 감정들이 덮어버립니다. 이번 스탠드도 이중 각도로 조립되는 하부구조, 상부와 하부가 서로 엇갈리고 받쳐주며 디테일이 숨어 있는 전체 형태는 본인이 제일 잘 알기에 자신의 가구를 좋아할 수밖에 없습니다. 수업 후 공간에서 잘 쓰이는 사진을 전달받으면 그때 저는 위와 같은 감정을 또 느낍니다. Just as good food depends largely on the quality of its ingredients, the choice of wood is one of the most important decisions in furniture making. For this project, we went with the students to Pocheon in search of maple burl. A vast space filled entirely with stacks of wood — such a place brings excitement to any woodworker. There’s also a certain joy in pulling out and examining each piece one by one. Looking at the furniture created by students in the independent study group, I can see how their thoughts and actions deepen with each new piece they build. They’re beginning to create furniture that requires more and more of their hands — in both effort and skill. Still, as always, even when the process feels like hard labor, the moment the piece is completed, all the fatigue is replaced with pride, joy, and a sense of achievement. This stand, too, is a reflection of that. Its double-angled lower structure, the way the upper and lower parts intersect and support each other, and the hidden details throughout — the maker knows these best, and that’s why it’s impossible not to love their own creation. UOSARCH DIGITAL MENTOR 2025 SUMMER WORKSHOP 학생들과 멋진 가구를 만들 수 있어서 좋았습니다. 디지털 프로그램을 이용해 디자인을 하고 그것을 직접 만들어 본다는 것은 흔치 않은 기회일 겁니다. 이번 워크숍에서 학생들이 많은 걸 느꼈길 바랍니다. 새로운 공간에 자리 잡은 가구 사진을 전달받았는데 자리를 잘 잡은 것 같아 뿌듯합니다. It was a great experience to create such beautiful furniture with the students. Designing using digital tools and then making those designs by hand is a rare and valuable opportunity. I hope the students gained a lot from this workshop. UOSARCH DIGITAL MENTOR 2025 SUMMER WORKSHOP TEAM 04 : Displayable table for magazine / 강지원, 이승민, 이승연, 황보민 테이블 상판을 지지하는 구조적 방식에 초점을 맞춰서 디자인을 했다. 일반적으로 외곽에 배치되는 보를 중앙으로 옮김으로 상판을 두 개로 나눠 가운데 틈을 형성했다. 이 틈은 단순히 구조적인 역할만 하는 게 아니라 잡지를 세워 전시를 할 수 있도록 의도하였다. 사용자는 앉은 상태에서 쉽게 책에 접근이 가능할 뿐만 아니라 시각적으로도 도움이 된다. 상판 중앙에는 립(rib)을 분해 조립이 가능한 방식으로 만들어서 전시 용도와 비전시 용도 두 가지 모두 활용이 가능하다. The design focuses on the structural approach to supporting the tabletop. By repositioning the beam—typically placed along the outer edges—to the center, the tabletop is split into two sections, creating a central gap. This gap serves not only a structural purpose but is also intentionally designed to hold and display magazines upright. This allows users to easily access reading materials while seated, while also offering visual engagement within the space. UOSARCH DIGITAL MENTOR 2025 SUMMER WORKSHOP TEAM 03 : Chair for Archive Room / 김재우, 김준우, 서준혁, 이태화 어디든 안정적으로 놓일 수 있는 삼발이 의자를 기본으로 각 다리가 팔걸이와 등받이의 역할을 할 수 있게 디자인하였다. 판재를 이용한 가구인만큼 ’면‘적인 특징을 강조하면서 미세한 각도가 앉았을 때 얼마나 편안함을 주는지 체험할 수 있다. 라이노를 통해 모델링과 CNC 가공을 위한 도면을 그렸고 가공된 목재는 모형공작실의 기계와 끌, 대패 등 수공구를 활용해 미세한 각도 작업을 마무리 했다. 나사와 목심으로 조립했으며 바니쉬로 마감을 했다. The design is based on a tripod chair, which offers stable placement on any surface. Each leg is shaped to also function as an armrest or backrest, depending on its position. As a piece made from sheet material, the chair emphasizes surface characteristics, allowing users to physically experience how subtle angles can greatly affect comfort when seated. The model was created using Rhinoceros (Rhino), and fabrication drawings were prepared for CNC machining. After the wood components were cut, fine angle adjustments were completed using hand tools such as chisels, planes, and other workshop equipment. UOSARCH DIGITAL MENTOR 2025 SUMMER WORKSHOP TEAM 02 : Triplet Chari : Zero waste plywood design / 김민규, 윤승원, 전지원 2440*1220의 합판에서 의자 부속품들을 떼어내고 나면 나머지 합판은 사용 목적을 잃고 버려진다. 최대한 버려지는 재료가 없이 의자를 만들어내는 것을 목표로 전개도를 그렸다. 판재라는 재료의 특성을 보여주기 위해 최소한의 분절을 통해 ’면‘의 요소를 강조하였다. 또한 등받이의 각도를 세 가지로 변형하여 비슷하면서도 착석감이 서로 다른 3개의 의자를 디자인했다. After cutting out the chair components from a 2440×1220 mm plywood sheet, the remaining material often becomes unusable and discarded. This project aimed to design a layout that minimizes material waste and allows the entire sheet to be used efficiently. To highlight the characteristics of sheet material, the design emphasizes surface elements through minimal segmentation. 서울시립대학교 건축학부 디지털 멘토 여름 워크숍에 참여했습니다. 이번 워크숍은 건축학부 공용공간 환경개선공사로 새롭게 조성되는 공간을 위한 가구를 만들었습니다. 디자인부터 제작까지 학생들이 직접 만들었습니다. 방학임에도 불구하고 적극적으로 참여하는 학생들 덕분에 즐거운 워크숍이었습니다. 완성된 가구는 팀별로 고유의 색이 묻어나고 수준급의 가구입니다. I participated in the Digital Mentor Summer Workshop hosted by the Department of Architecture at the University of Seoul. In this workshop, we created furniture for a newly developed space as part of a renovation project to improve the department‘s shared areas. From design to fabrication, everything was made directly by the students. Thanks to their active participation—even during the summer break—it was a truly enjoyable workshop. 작업기록, 내일부터 시작되는 새로운 워크숍을 위해 작은 드로우 나이프를 구매했습니다. 드로우 나이프는 대패질보다는 두껍게 덜 어내며 손쉽게 윤곽을 잡을 수 있습니다. 매번 서양 공구를 살 때마다 딸려오는 밴드의 유머는 피식 미소를 짓게 합니다. 늘 조심, 안전목공 WIP, I purchased a small drawknife for a new workshop starting tomorrow. Compared to planing, a drawknife removes thicker shavings and makes it easier to shape the overall form. Every time I buy a Western hand tool, the humor in the packaging band always makes me smile.
