Unravelling by Emme Pretorius @emmepstudio
The forest, the mystical and intricate system of beings, is unravelling, coming apart by the seams. Looking to the Afrotemperate forests of the Garden Route, this body of work is a reflection on this unravelling. Having a close relationship with these forests, a deep connection and a space where her thoughts unravel (where things become clear) Emme Pretorius wants to make this unravelling visible to create awareness about the state of the forest, while contemplating her own space in it.
Using old photographic processes, shooting with cameras from a time where the forest might have looked different, and printing with expired photographic paper, she represents this ghost -like nature of the forest and the fragmentation thereof. In her work, she metaphorically fixes these forests in the only way she knows how — with a needle and a thread.

Emme Pretorius @emmepstudio
Having grown up in the Garden Route of South Africa, an area of lush vegetation and forests, Emme Pretorius’s connection with nature there is what forms the basis of her artistic practice. She looks to bring awareness to the nuances of current environmental issues and its interconnectedness with the human experience through her artworks. She does this through the lens of analogue and darkroom photographic processes and explores the multitude of possibilities that photography can provide as an art form. All the while, her practice remains a deeply introspective meandering within the subconscious mind and personal meditations in nature.

Two days until the opening of this year’s Investec Cape Town Art Fair where we will be exhibiting FRAGMENTED LANDSCAPES - works by BARRY SALZMAN in conversation with EMME PRETORIUS.
This exhibition serves as a testament to the artists’ shared commitment to addressing the aftermath of trauma and destruction. Through their distinct lenses and artistic techniques, Pretorius and Salzman aim to communicate these fragmented realities to the viewer, inviting reflection on the impermanence of nature, the resilience of the human spirit, and the indelible marks left on the landscapes they explore.
