Centuries after the builder of Longleat displayed the largest falcons in the world, you can marvel at the speed of similar birds over May half term! 🪽
Sir John Thynne brought a gyrfalcon from London in the 16th century, and accounts show that this impressive bird - which had a wingspan between 110 and 160 cm - was fed a feast of a leg of mutton, four sheep hearts, a chicken and other meat before making the journey to Longleat. Goshawks, hobbies, sparrowhawks and lanners were also amongst the birds that he flew alongside his falconers here at Longleat 🦅

We are pleased to share that we will be giving the @the_rhs Chelsea Flower Show's Australian Garden a new lease of life here at Longleat 🌸🌼
After the show finishes up later this month, our gardeners will be creating a new Australian garden space using hard structural elements from their themed show garden designed by @maxparkersmith . Not only will it complement Koala Creek, but it will also continue to tell the story of conservation and climate resilient planting for years to come.
We're so excited to reveal the garden when it is complete! In the meantime, you can see the full show garden, 'Journey Beyond the Tracks: Adelaide to Perth', at the Chelsea Flower Show next week.
