5 seconds after I took this photo, a teenager ran up to me and was like WOW YOU WROTE A BOOK CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!! and that is the energy that I am bringing into 2026 🫰 🫰 eternal gratitude to @barnesandnoble for seeing something universal in my weird little earthquake book, and choosing Tilt as the fiction pick of January

Skip the airport endcap. 📚 This Mother's Day, give the reader in your life something her shelves will actually thank you for: 10 California books handpicked by Alta's editors and critics. From Julie Otsuka's The Swimmers to Maggie Nelson's The Argonauts, Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club, Cherríe Moraga's mother-daughter memoir Native Country of the Heart, Emma Pattee's earthquake debut Tilt, and a slim, beautifully made volume of poems by Māori poet Tayi Tibble. Mother-daughter memoirs that refuse easy sentiment. A field guide to the West's best indie bookstores. One keepsake issue for the mom building (or arguing with) her own California library. Tap the link in bio for the full guide. 🌹 #MothersDay #MothersDayGifts #GiftsForMom #BookLovers #BookishGifts #Bookstagram #CaliforniaBooks #CaliforniaReads #LiteraryGifts #ReadCalifornia #IndependentBookstores #AltaJournal #CaliforniaBookClub #WomenWriters #ReadersOfInstagram #BookLover #GiftGuide

Honored to be in the Labor issue of @orion_magazine talking with Sarah Schulman and Naomi R Williams about the risks and rewards of solidarity...and why Jolene is the perfect solidarity anthem. This topic was vital to me as I've been expanding my own capacity for risk and solidarity in my personal life and my career. Enormous thanks to @tararaem for bringing this to life and @indimaverick for the gorgeous illustration.

Such an honor to have Tilt chosen by @hillsborolibrary for Hillsboro Reads 2026. I spoke on Saturday to nearly 200 people about my inspiration for the book, and my journey from weird homeschooled hippie kid to climate journalist to debut novelist

🌎 WORLD CLIMATE AUTHOR CHAT 🌏 Tilt by @emmapattee paperback pub day 12/30/25 This is the book you’ve been meaning to read for World Climate Day / EARTH DAY! 🌎 Longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal of Excellence in Fiction A @nytimes Book Review Editors’ Choice A @usatoday Bestseller A Best Book of 2025 for @voguemagazine Named one of Time’s 100 Must-Read Books of 2025 An @npr favorite fiction read of 2025 If you’d like to attend this free zoom, either leave a comment here or add yourself to the group via my Author Chat Broadcast Channel linked in my bio. This is one you don’t want to miss!!! It will be a spoiler full convo so get it read & bring your questions! Last night, you and I were safe. Last night, in another universe, your father and I stood fighting in the kitchen. Annie is 9 mos pregnant and shopping for a crib at @ikeausa when a massive earthquake hits Portland, Oregon. With no way to reach her husband, no phone or money, and a city left in chaos, there’s nothing to do but walk. Making her way across the wreckage of Portland, Annie experiences human desperation and kindness: strangers offering help, a riot at a grocery store, and an unlikely friendship with a young mother. As she walks, Annie reflects on her struggling marriage, her disappointing career, and her anxiety about having a baby. If she can just make it home, she’s determined to change her life. “Shocking and full of heart” (@publisherswkly , starred review), Tilt is a “moving adrenaline rush” (The New York Times Book Review) and “epic odyssey” (NPR) about the disappointments and desires we all carry, and what each of us will do for the people we love.

Every woman I see, I think: you too? you too? My friend texted me: "I'm just so sorry for all of us." And damn, doesn't that just sum it up 💔

It's such an honor to go on book tour and get to meet readers and booksellers. I don't take a minute of it for granted! But these crazy times call for us to stand together and sometimes that means doing things I wouldn't normally dream of, like *gulp* canceling a book event. Huge thanks to @tatteredcoverbookstore for their understanding. No work, no school, no shopping!!! let's go! #generalstrike #solidarity
