VALLEY SWIM CLUB | Sonoma, California, USA 🇺🇸 📍 Valley Swim Club — Sonoma, California, USA A California roadhouse shaped by the sea. That's Valley Swim Club — and on August 26, 2026, they're joining restaurants around the world in something that challenges everything we take for granted about dining. "We are always interested in challenging and interrogating issues of access and economy." That's the spirit. The Pay What You Can / Paga Lo Que Puedas Global Restaurant Initiative is exactly that challenge — one day where every restaurant in this movement says: the price won't be the reason you don't come in. Eat what you want. Pay what you can. See you at Valley Swim Club on August 26. IWP Ep100 A Hidden History of the Chinese in Sonoma Valley Wine - Coral Wang of Maison des Plaisances and @emmalipp - @valleybarandbottle @coral.shumai of @maisondpwine and I have been hard at work on this special episode about the Chinese in early California viticulture.  We’re going to be focussed in the Sonoma Valley and focussed around Viniculture but Napa, Fresno, LA and orchard and row crops will also make an appearance.  Coral was the one who challenged me to get started on this episode and she contributed research, ideas, pronunciations and more.  Her energy and enthusiasm for it were infectious. You should really check out her wines if you haven’t Maisondp.com or taste them at Dos Bar.  Emma Lipp of Valley Bar and Bottle joins us also.  Her and Coral have a great conversation about Chinese contributions in food and wine, cultural appropriation, paying homage and respect to other cultures, what it means to be a Chinese American winemaker and much more. After that, I contribute some deeply researched history and Coral provides some more thoughts and texture to that history.  Valley was an intentional choice to record at, Jacob Leese built this building in 1836 and it’s one of the oldest in the town. Chinese homes and businesses used to line the nearby streets. It goes without saying that too much of this episode feels like it could be happening in 2026. Our friends at @laughing_gems_wine and @garage__gal provided some great wine for the episode. Follow the podcast @indiewinepodcast or email [email protected] with questions, comments or feedback. If you’d like to support the podcast further, please tell your wine friends about it and rate the podcast wherever you’re listening if you like what you hear or donate on Patreon at - /IndieWinePodcast to allow more episodes and to help defray other costs likes travel and research books. From bustling morning markets to fragrant street stalls, Vietnam tells its story through food. With each dish, a memory. With each flavor, a sense of place. Emma & Steph invite you to taste the soul of Vietnam, one bowl, one bite, one moment at a time. Let your senses lead the way. modernadventure.com/emma-steph/

I was once briefly a “busboy” at a Vietnamese restaurant, where I became addicted to cleaning out the condensed milk can at the end of the night with a spoon that ran straight to my mouth, and nem nuong, delicious little pork sausages wrapped around sugarcane. The job wasn’t a good fit but the food was, and I’ve been chasing Vietnamese cuisine ever since. For years I spent several mornings a week at Portland’s now famous Ha and VL, mainlining strong iced coffee and restoring myself with soups laden with intoxicating herbal aromatics, vinegary chiles and a range of new textures. I’ve journeyed to San Jose just for bahn xeo; Steph and I willingly trek to Oakland for bahn mi. For us, the only penicillin that rivals the matzo ball is a bowl of pho. We have long been dreaming of making a pilgrimage to the source, and next November, you can join us for the adventure. For ten days we will be journeying from Hanoi to Hue, Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City, stopping at markets and to eat street food along the way. We will visit historical sites, cook traditional dishes, stay in nice hotels, take boat rides and ride on motorbikes. It will be a delicious and action-packed @modernadventurists trip. The rich foodways of the Vietnamese diaspora we’ve benefited from stateside are just the tip to getting to know the history and humanity of this diverse and vibrant country. We are so excited to begin this exploration, and we would love for you to join us. Link in bio, DM for more info, and GIFT2025 through Black Friday for $750 off!
