yooo #artstigators , Halloween countdown 🎃 continues with this week’s takeover, artstigator Emma Geiger (she/her) @emmageiger , who shares how knitting helps her to be active and engaged when she’s feelin’ dull creatively -> don’t miss her show on Nov. 6th @arcanadurham w/ @ameliariggsdotmidi …🔦 🎙️ “By having a number of different mediums I enjoy working in, I can lean on others if I am lacking inspiration in some area. I’ve found knitting to be really helpful as a way to be active and engaged, even if I’m feeling dull creatively. The repetition is meditative, and the work progresses slowly, reminding me to cultivate patience in my other practices. This summer, I was experimenting with making phytograms on 16mm using plants and seaweed. I was working on spinning and knitting then too, so I had a lot of raw wool from my family’s farm in Iceland, and I got the idea to try printing with that on the film... It ended up making some really beautiful patterns and unexpected colors! Emma here (she/her)- I make music, photographs, and video work (primarily on film), and experiment with natural textiles too. After receiving a travel fellowship from @cassilhaus earlier this year, I spent the summer in Iceland working on a documentary project about my Icelandic ancestry and the land. I grew up in Hopkinton, New Hampshire, and then spent time living in upstate New York, Maine, and Los Angeles. I moved out to Cedar Grove this summer, after living in Durham for the past 5 years. Lately, some of my work has been making 35mm photographs, 16mm film, and continuing to work on writing music. I’m always figuring out how to balance and divide my energy between different modes of expression, but find that they each have the ability to reveal something different, and that they often inform each other.
